Book Description
This book is the outcome of a decade’s research into a speci?c architecture and associated learning mechanism for an arti?cial neural network: the - chitecture involves negative feedback and the learning mechanism is simple Hebbian learning. The research began with my own thesis at the University of Strathclyde, Scotland, under Professor Douglas McGregor which culminated with me being awarded a PhD in 1995 [52], the title of which was “Negative Feedback as an Organising Principle for Arti?cial Neural Networks”. Naturally enough, having established this theme, when I began to sup- vise PhD students of my own, we continued to develop this concept and this book owes much to the research and theses of these students at the Applied Computational Intelligence Research Unit in the University of Paisley. Thus we discuss work from • Dr. Darryl Charles [24] in Chapter 5. • Dr. Stephen McGlinchey [127] in Chapter 7. • Dr. Donald MacDonald [121] in Chapters 6 and 8. • Dr. Emilio Corchado [29] in Chapter 8. We brie?y discuss one simulation from the thesis of Dr. Mark Girolami [58] in Chapter 6 but do not discuss any of the rest of his thesis since it has already appeared in book form [59]. We also must credit Cesar Garcia Osorio, a current PhD student, for the comparative study of the two Exploratory Projection Pursuit networks in Chapter 8. All of Chapters 3 to 8 deal with single stream arti?cial neural networks.

Intelligent Autonomous Systems
Author: Dilip Kumar Pratihar
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3642116760
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 269
Book Description
Intelligent Autonomous Systems (IAS) are the physical embodiment of machine intelligence providing a core concept for integrating various advanced techno- gies with pattern recognition and learning. The basic philosophy of IAS research is to explore and understand the nature of intelligence in problems of perception, reasoning, learning and control in order to develop and implement the theory to engineered realization. In other words, the objective is to formulate various me- odologies for the development of robots which can operate autonomously and exhibit intelligent behavior by making appropriate decisions to perform the right task at the right time. Since IAS basically deals with the integration of machines, computing, sensing, and software to create intelligent systems capable of intera- ing with the complexities of the real world, advanced topics like soft computing, artificial life, evolutionary biology, and cognitive psychology have great promise in improving its intelligence and performance. Because of the inter-disciplinary character, the subject has several challenging issues for research, design and development covering a number of disciplines. These issues are further concerned with the development of both technology and methodology apart from various operations. The present research monograph titled “Intelligent Autonomous Systems: Foundations and Applications", edited by two renowned researchers, Professor Dilip K. Pratihar of IIT, Kharagpur, India and Professor Lakhmi C. Jain, Univ- sity of South Australia, Australia, provides a fairly representative cross-section of the activities that is going on all over the world in this area.

Grey Information
Author: Sifeng Liu
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1846283426
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 512
Book Description
Rapid formation and development of new theories of systems science have become an important part of modern science and technology. For - ample, since the 1940s, there have appeared systems theory, information theory, fuzzy mathematics, cybernetics, dissipative structures, synergetics, catastrophe theory, chaos theory, bifurcations, ultra circulations, dynamics, and many other systems theories. Grey systems theory is also one of such systems theories that appeared initially in the 1980s. When the research of systems science and the method and technology of systems engineering are applied in various traditional disciplines, such as management science, decision science, and various scienti?c disciplines, a whole new group of new results and breakthroughs are obtained. Such a historical background has provided the environment and soil for grey systems theory to form and to develop rapidly in the past 20-plus years. More speci?cally, in 1982, Professor Deng Ju-Long published the ?rst research paper in the area of grey systems in the international journal entitled Systems and Control Letters, published by North-Holland Co. His paper was titled “Control Problems of Grey Systems. ” The publication of this paper signalled the birth of grey systems theory after many years of e ective research of the founding father. This new theory soon caught the attention of the international academic community and practitioners of science. Many well-known scholars, such as Chinese academicians Qian Xueshen, Song Jian, and Zhang Zhongjun. Professor Roger W.

Artificial Neural Nets and Genetic Algorithms
Author: George D. Smith
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3709164923
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 654
Book Description
This is the third in a series of conferences devoted primarily to the theory and applications of artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms. The first such event was held in Innsbruck, Austria, in April 1993, the second in Ales, France, in April 1995. We are pleased to host the 1997 event in the mediaeval city of Norwich, England, and to carryon the fine tradition set by its predecessors of providing a relaxed and stimulating environment for both established and emerging researchers working in these and other, related fields. This series of conferences is unique in recognising the relation between the two main themes of artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms, each having its origin in a natural process fundamental to life on earth, and each now well established as a paradigm fundamental to continuing technological development through the solution of complex, industrial, commercial and financial problems. This is well illustrated in this volume by the numerous applications of both paradigms to new and challenging problems. The third key theme of the series, therefore, is the integration of both technologies, either through the use of the genetic algorithm to construct the most effective network architecture for the problem in hand, or, more recently, the use of neural networks as approximate fitness functions for a genetic algorithm searching for good solutions in an 'incomplete' solution space, i.e. one for which the fitness is not easily established for every possible solution instance.
