Book Description
This book offers a critical anthropological perspective on contemporary childhood in Haiti. It is based on longitudinal ethnographic fieldwork carried out over a period of 13 years with vulnerable children in Haiti. Diane M. Hoffman raises important questions about how interventions by well-meaning foreigners and 'white saviors' often misrepresent Haitian culture and society as deficient, while privileging their own emotions alongside supposedly universal ideas about children that reinforce their own power to define and intervene in Haitian lives. She argues for a new approach to Haitian childhood that centers children's informal learning and self-education alongside indigenous spirituality and constructions of personhood that can resist the hegemony of neo-colonial and neo-liberal forces. Instead of representing the country and its children as a place of "problems to be solved," the book shows the importance prioritizing aspects of Haitian world-views in order to develop a more culturally-informed understanding of childhood in Haiti that can support genuine social change.

Hope for Leaders Facing Burnout and Discouragement Around the world, discouragement erodes the vitality of organizations. Visionaries often succumb to cynicism. Zealous advocates give up. Leaders coast as their passion for the cause grows cold. Grounded in research, this book is an invitation for followers of Jesus to sustain hope in long-term service. It's about moving past the false hope of idealism and the faint hope of disillusionment to discover true Christian hope. You will gain encouragement through the study of the book of Jeremiah woven throughout as the authors explore how the Lord prophetically met and sustained Jeremiah during his lifetime of faithfulness despite literally nothing going as he'd hoped. Glean further inspiration by reading the stories of Christian leaders from around the globe: Zimbabwe, Haiti, Guatemala, Poland, Palestine, the Philippines, India, Zambia, and Lebanon. For this is a moment when we need the global Church's perspective and influence. Don't give up and don't check out. These are confounding and perilous days, yet God's sustaining presence can bring joy, hope, and encouragement even amid heartache and disappointment.

Book Description
Come along on my 30 year love affair with Haiti! Well, almost thirty years have come and gone since my first visit to Haiti, and I am no longer the young, idealistic woman who took on the challenge of helping to improve the lives of the children of Haiti. In fact, now my children not only have children, they have grandchildren, which make me a great grandmother! Looking back, in many ways it is ironic that my long-term involvement in Haiti came as a result of a little girl simply asking if I could help pay for her to go to school. I am not only very grateful to her, but to all of the children that I have been able to assist. From my "moonlighting" to raise $120 to educate that first student while volunteering for AmeriCares, to facilitating the acquisition and distribution of tens of millions of dollars of medical supplies after the devastating 2010 earthquake, it has been a "hellu'va ride"--One that has truly enriched my life! Throughout my journey, my family has been most understanding, gracious and very supportive in every way. However, the biggest surprise, and my greatest pleasure, has been to have my granddaughter, Tiffany, take over my role and greatly expand the work of Hope for Haiti! Although I shall continue to serve the people of Haiti for as long as I am able, clearly it will require the dedication of members of the next generation, if Hope for Haiti is to continue to prosper. I pray that they will do so. --Back cover.
