In addition to these more formal meetings the Boston members of the Class have given two subscription dinners the first on J annary 24, 1918, at the Harvard Club and the second on May 8, 1918, at the Union Club, Boston. It is planned to have some dinners by subscription this year, and it is to be hoped that the din ners in Boston and New York for the whole Class by invitation may be continued. It is somewhat interesting to note that as diners we are far ahead of our contemporaries, and that no class within ten years of us shows so large an attendance of members either at the formal or informal dinners. the Secretary sin cerely hopes that the severe drought now upon as will not wither our good-fellowship. Excerpt from Harvard College Class of 1888: Ninth Report, Fortieth Anniversary George Royal Pulsifer, our late Class Secretary, issued the Eighth Report of the Class of 1888 in January, 1920. In his introductory note he recounted our Class activities following the Twenty-fifth Reunion down to and including June, 1919. Taking up the history where he left off, our records show an unbroken succession of Class Spreads and Class Meetings, annually, at No. 1 Holworthy on Commencement Day from 1920 to and including 1928. In addition to these observances, Frederick Bradlee in June, 1920, entertained the Class at lunch at his country-seat at Sherbom. In June, 1921, Frederic Kennard had the Class as his guests at his home in Newton Centre. In June, 1922, Charles Adams invited the Class to his home at Concord for a Class Dinner. The year 1923, which was the year of our Thirty-fifth Anniversary, opened with a Class Dinner given in the month of February at the Harvard Club of New York by Benjamin and Judge George Albert Carpenter and S. L. Swarts. Judge Carpenter presided. The June reunion began the day before Commencement when Larz Anderson and his wife entertained the Class and their wives at lunch in Brookline. From the Andersons' the Class went in a body to the Yale baseball game on Soldiers Field. Late on Commencement afternoon we motored by way of B. W. Palmer's estate in Hamilton to James Appleton's farm at Ipswich where he was host to upwards of fifty of us at the Class Dinner. In the month of August, 1923, the Class sustained a grievous loss in the death of our beloved, faithful and efficient Class Secretary, George Pulsifer, who had served us since 1905. Commencement 1888 To The Class of Eighty: - In preparing this report I have, as a rule, let each man speak for himself, so that the information given is absolutely reliable. In a very few instances I have added facts which the writer has neglected to mention, and on the other hand I have omitted considerable matter which seemed inappropriate; for instance, statements of salaries, hopes for the future, engagements, and most of the humor inspired by question number two. The office of editor has been more difficult than I anticipated, and frequently I have been perplexed in the extreme to know whether I should offend more by omitting or by inserting. Will you all kindly remember that in so large a class there is great variety of taste. I make no apology, however, for giving so much space to Bradley and Geddes: I fear rather that I shall be blamed for not giving more. There are few innovations in this report. Seventy-seven printed a picture of their baby, and Seventy-nine of their window. Much of the matter in the Appendix has rarely been given, however, and not, I think, in any recent report. The Class Directory is a novelty which will, I hope, prove useful. The names of a few men who were always identified with the Class of Seventy-nine have been omitted, by request, from the body of this report, and also the name of one classmate. Excerpt from Harvard College Class of 1885: Secretary's Report No; II, 1888-89 To the Class of Eighty-five: - It was my sincere hope, apart from all selfish motives for escaping the work, that this second report of your secretary to the class should be entirely the work of your first choice for that office, Walter A. Halbert, and as such, when completed, a cherished souvenir of a most beloved class-officer. It was he who began the task, now more than a year ago, and to him is due the credit of obtaining by far the largest part of the material for the report in the form of the lives which follow. Even after he had felt obliged to resign from the office of secretary, he continued the preparation of this report, and only gave it up when he found that his continued ill-health did not enable him to do more work than his regular daily duties called for. Since that time the work of completing the report has been my care, and it is for me to bear the responsibility for any defects or errors which appear in it as it stands. In the Lives, I have endeavored to let each man tell his story in his own words as nearly as possible. Where any one has failed to throw information returned on his blank into the form of a sketch, I have endeavored to do it for him to the best of my ability; and where, as has sometimes happened, no return whatever has been made in reply to my numerous entreaties and autograph letters, I have had to supply such defects either from personal knowledge of the actions of the delinquents, or by inquiries among and information supplied by other classmates familiar with them. It has been my aim to have the returns as complete as possible, and I have made every endeavor to reach even those among the temporary members of the class who have never made any previous returns to class documents or inquiries. The result has been gratifying, and the report will be found to contain at least something about every one of our one hundred and ninety-one graduates, and about all of the temporary members, except four.
