Book Description
A collection of nineteen of Hans Christian Andersen's most famous short stories, first published in 1912. Stories include: 'The Little Mermaid', 'The Emperor's New Clothes', 'Little Thumb', and 'The Snow Queen', 'The Galoshes of Fortune', 'The Red Shoes', 'The Wild Swans' and others. Hans Christian Andersen (1805 – 1875) was a Danish poet and author celebrated for his children’s stories but perhaps best known for his fables and fairy tales – meant for both adults and children. They were frequently written in a colloquial style, using idioms and spoke language in a manner previously unseen in Danish literature. Though simple at first glance, Hans Andersen Fairy Tales often convey sophisticated moral teachings, in equal measure heart-breaking and heart-warming. These tales are further enhanced by the wonderful watercolour illustrations of A. Duncan Carse - a lesser known though immensely accomplished artist and Golden Age illustrator. Andreas Duncan Carse (1876 - 1938) provided the illustrations for Lucy M. Scott’s Dewdrops from Fairyland in 1912 but it was Carse’s contributions to Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales that arguably solidified his reputation as an accomplished illustrator of children’s books. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s classics and fairy tales – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

About the Author: Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish poet and author celebrated for his children's stories but perhaps best known for his immortal Fairy Tales meant for both adults and children and frequently written in a colloquial style to veil their sophisticated moral teachings. He broke new ground in terms of style and content by using idioms and constructions of spoken language in a way that had previously not been seen in Danish literature. His poetry and stories have been translated into over 150 languages, inspiring a wealth of films, plays and ballets. About the Illustrator: Anne Anderson (1874-c.1940) was a Scottish illustrator chiefly noted for her Art Nouveau children's book illustrations that display fluidity typical of the movement. Characteristic of her work are decorative and lightly drawn or painted illustrations of neatly dressed children, neatly dressed with pear-shaped faces. Anderson's work has been compared to that of Jessie M. King, a contemporary.

Book Description
This volume of the Golden Age of Illustration Series contains Hans Christian Andersen’s ‘The Red Shoes’. This classic fairy tale has been continuously in print in different editions since its first publication, with many, many, different artists illustrating the story over the years. This edition features a beautiful collection of the best of that art, taken from the likes of Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Harry Clarke, Honor Appleton, Jennie Harbour, among others. This series of books celebrates the Golden Age of Illustration. During this period, the popularity, abundance and – most importantly – the unprecedented upsurge in the quality of illustrated works marked an astounding change in the way that publishers, artists and the general public came to view this hitherto insufficiently esteemed art form. The Golden Age of Illustration Series, has sourced the rare original editions of these books and reproduced the beautiful art work in order to build a unique collection of illustrated fairy tales. ‘The Red Shoes’ was first published in April of 1845, as part of Andersen’s New Fairy Tales: First Volume, Third Collection. Andersen explained the source of the story as being an incident he had witnessed as a small child. His father, he stated, had been sent a piece of red silk by a rich lady, who wanted the material converted into a pair of dancing slippers. Andersen’s father produced the slippers, but the rich woman was horrified at the result, and in reaction to her harsh criticism, he cut the shoes up in front of her.
