Excerpt from Stratigraphic Policy of the Illinois State Geological Survey It is not the intent of this report to establish an inviolate code, because the nature of sedimentary rocks makes it imperative to allow for flexibility and for future changes. It is our hope that this statement of policy, while providing a needed degree of uniformity in stratigraphic classification and nomenclature in Survey publications, will at the same time increase the flexibility of the classification, and will direct attention to fundamental problems in this field. Nor is it our intent at this time to revise the ranking and nomenclature of the entire stratigraphic column of Illinois to conform to the present statement. Excerpt from Stratigraphy and Petrography of Illinoian and Kansan Drift in Central Illinois The contrast between the relatively fresh glacial morphology of the Buffalo Hart drift plain and the subdued topography of the Jacksonville surface and the presence of lacustrine deposits between the two drifts suggest the possibility of a significant break in the Illinoian glacial sequence at this stratigraphic position. However, no weathered zone was found-between the drifts, and the degree of development of the Sangamon Soil does not vary greatly on the two drifts.
