The data collected are used to assess present conditions, compare data with water quality guidelines, investigate specific water quality issues, or determine long-term trends. Monitoring programs also assess whether regulatory processes are effective in protecting water bodies from excessive nutrients, metals, pesticides and toxic substances. Another purpose in monitoring surface waters is in support of the Water for Life strategy of the Alberta government. ... The purpose of this document is to recommend QA/QC ([quality assurance/quality control]) guidelines for all water and sediment sampling programs conducted by aquatic scientists in the Alberta government.
