Book Description
Paricutin volcano (19°29'33" N; 102°14'59" W; 2780 m.a.s.l.) is located 320 km to the west of Mexico City and 20 km North West of the town of Uruapan in the state of Michoacán, It is part of an extensive volcanic field (40,000 km2) known as the Michoacán-Guanajuato Volcanic Field with more than 1000 Quaternary volcanic structures (Hasenaka and Carmichael, 1985). This region belongs to the western part of the Mexican Volcanic Belt which transects the country from east to west and is related to the subduction, along the Mesoamerican Trench, of the Cocos and Rivera tectonic plates below the North American plate. The itinerary of the excursion starts in Morelia, Michoacán, and the travel by bus take 2 hour and a half by paved highway just to Angahuan, the nearest town to Parícutin. A dirt road from the town of Angahuan leads to the tourist center of Angahuan "Las Cabañas de Angahuan", here one can admire the panorama of Parícutin volcano, its lava flows and the church covered by lava flows, which can be reached by walking or horse riding. The excursion until the church ruins takes about 3 hours roundtrip so it is a good idea to bring water along. Horses can be rented for a fee at the tourist center. Enjoy your hike.
