Excerpt from Guide to the Old Moravian Cemetery of Bethlehem, Pa., 1742-1897 1. Nathaniel Seidel, 1718 - 82, a Bishop of the Moravian Church, and for twenty years the President of the American Provincial Board. He was born at Lauban, Silesia, on October 2, 1718, the son of a Bohe mian emigrant, and learned the trade of cloth-weaving. Having found Jesus as his Saviour he joined the Moravian Church at Herrn hut in 1739, and came to Bethlehem in 1742 to engage in evangelistic work. He was appointed itinerant missionary among the Indians and white settlers, and to this end made many journeys, always on foot, laboring with great zeal and success. In 1748 he was ordained a Presbyter. Five years later he was sent on an official visitation to the Danish West Indies, the next year to North Carolina, (where he founded the church at Bethabara, ) and the following year to the mission in Surinam, S. A. In 1758 he was consecrated a Bishop, and after Zinzendorf's death became President of the Provincial Board of Elders in place of Bishop Spangenberg, who returned to Germany. He was married to Anna Joanna Fiesch, a niece of Anna Nitschmann. They left no children. He departed this life on May. In Moravian Soundscapes, Sarah Eyerly contends that the study of sound is integral to understanding the interactions between German Moravian missionaries and Native communities in early Pennsylvania. In the mid-18th century, when the frontier between settler and Native communities was a shifting spatial and cultural borderland, sound mattered. People listened carefully to each other and the world around them. In Moravian communities, cultures of hearing and listening encompassed and also superseded musical traditions such as song and hymnody. Complex biophonic, geophonic, and anthrophonic acoustic environments—or soundscapes—characterized daily life in Moravian settlements such as Bethlehem, Nain, Gnadenhütten, and Friedenshütten. The Moravians, or Bohemian Brethren, early Protestants who settled in Pennsylvania and North Carolina in the eighteenth century, brought a musical repertoire that included hymns, sacred vocal works accompanied by chamber orchestra, and instrumental music by the best-known European composers of the day. Anyone aspiring to a command of the literature on the Pennsylvania Germans must master its contents; and anyone doing research in Pennsylvania-German genealogy must have it at his side. Divided into subject categories, the bibliography contains citations to all published writings dealing with the Germans in colonial North America (chiefly Pennsylvania), whether in the form of general histories, magazine articles, newspapers, pamphlets, mug-books, church records, town, county, and state histories, or printed genealogies, and it attempts to give as complete an account of the printed source material as possible.
