Four seeds were planted per pot and two weeks after emergence and the two least vigorous plants were removed. Nine weeks after emergence, the plants were harvested and determined P and Zn and CA content. The Swine manure increased dry matter in corn plants (roots, and whole plant) and P uptake. Zinc did not increase either dry matter production, Zn uptake, or P from uptake. Carbonic anhydrase did not change among the treatments indicating no active Zn response. Phosphorus and Zn uptake in response to swine manure was greatest when Zn was not added. Zinc application was not necessary in high P testing soils when swine manure was applied. The results indicated that PFFB did not cause either P or Zn deficiencies in the crops. The high levels of P and Zn appeared to have no affect on either P or Zn absorption by corn and soybean in the experiments.

Corn (Zea mays) response to fertilization and placement methods has been studied extensively; however studies on soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] response to placement have been limited. Three studies were completed to evaluate different aspects of crop response. The objective of the first study was to evaluate the effect of starter and broadcast fertilizer application on corn and soybean, in a typical corn-soybean rotation in Kansas. Treatments were unfertilized control, starter (N, P and K), broadcast P and K using mono ammonium phosphate (MAP) and potassium chloride (KCl) and the combination of starter and broadcast. Corn and soybean yield generally was not affected by starter and broadcast treatments. Thus fertilization may be recommended only under specific conditions. The objectives of the second study were (i) to evaluate the effect of residual and direct fertilization on soybeans after corn under a corn-soybean rotation system, and (ii) study the effect of fertilizer P and K application on soil test P (STP) and soil test K (STK) changes over time. Direct fertilization increased soybean yield while residual fertilizer did not. Therefore maintenance rates may be effective to improve soybean yield and likely maintain STP and STK levels. Application of P and K fertilizer generated significant increases in STP and STK after one year of application. The rate of P and K fertilizer required to increase 1 mg kg−1 yr−1 was between 2.8 - 5.1 kg ha−1 for P and between 1.0- 2.5 kg ha−1 for K, respectively. The objective of the third study evaluate both corn and soybean response to direct P fertilization including starter and broadcast. The treatments were a control, two starter fertilizers (with N-P and N only), five P rates (9.8, 19.6, 29.3, 39.1, 48.9 kg P ha−1) and one treatment with starter fertilizer in addition to the broadcast fertilizer application. Corn grain yield was not significantly affected by any broadcast or starter treatments. Broadcast application rates significantly increased soybean yield on low STP levels. Results of this study show that large corn or soybean yield response to starter and broadcast P application are likely with low STP levels.

Phosphorus (P) and zinc (Zn) are required for the growth and development of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill). However, their interactions may affect the uptake of each nutrient and soybean growth, development, and yield. The objective of this research study was to identify possible interactions of P and Zn and determine the effect upon soybean nutrient status, yield, and agronomic efficiency. This study was conducted at the Illinois State University Farm at Lexington and Normal in 2020. The experimental design was a 4 x 4 factorial arranged in a randomized complete block design with four blocks at each location. Phosphorus was applied as mono-ammonium phosphate (MAP) at 0, 33, 67, 100 kg P ha-1 and zinc was applied as zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) at 0, 5, 11, 16 kg Zn ha-1. Fully developed trifoliate leaves from the top three nodes were collected at R2 and seed samples were taken at R6 for analysis of P and Zn. Phosphorus fertilization had no effect on the P concentration of leaves but increased the P concentration of the seeds. The P concentration of the seeds for the highest rate (100 kg P ha-1) was greater than the control (0 kg P ha-1) and the lowest P rate (33 kg P ha-1). Zinc application had no effect on Zn concentration of soybean leaves and seeds. Neither P nor Zn affected soybean yield components and yield. Phosphorus and zinc agronomic efficiency did not improve with P and Zn application, respectively.There was no soil P-Zn interaction that affected soybean growth and yield. However, there was a weak inverse correlation between leaf P concentration and seed Zn concentration (r = -0.43), and between leaf Zn concentration and seed P concentration (r = -0.30). This study revealed that soybean yield and agronomic efficiency do not respond positively to P and Zn application when the soil test indicates P and Zn are sufficient.
