Book Description
14 different countries, various research methods, 1 topic: Differentiated Instruction. With increasingly diverse student populations in schools, the establishment of inclusive classrooms has become a top international priority. Teachers around the world are urged to differentiate their instruction in order to support all students’ learning needs. Although there is research on the topic, there are still important gaps to explore, especially the underrepresented international research output. This book tackles such limitations and provides a first ever publication concerning global insights into differentiated instruction. A total of 14 countries from 5 continents provide empirical evidence, theoretical and practical approaches to the topic. The book wraps up with a contribution from Prof. Dr. John Hattie, University of Melbourne, who shares eight theses to help the continuing debate and research on differentiated instruction.

Book Description
Greater Expectations is the book that exposed the low standards that children are confronted with in our homes, our schools, and throughout our culture. It exploded many of the misconceptions about children and how to raise them, including the cult of self-esteem, "child-centered" learning, and other overly indulgent practices that have been watering down the education and guidance that we are providing our young people. It disclosed how the self-centered ethic is damaging our youth. Greater Expectations started America talking about these issues and about how young people need to be provided with challenges and a sense of purpose if we want them to survive and thrive in life. Provocative and challenging, Greater Expectations was a wake-up call, a must-read for anyone concerned about the growing youth crisis in America and what we can do about it.

Book Description
On October 20, 1994, President Clinton signed into law the Improving America's Schools Act of 1994. This statute contains amendments to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, including the reauthorization of Chapter 1, as the newly entitled Title I. The reauthorized Title I drastically restructures the direction of former remedial programs, in which students were pulled out of their regular classrooms to participate in special remedial classrooms. The bill pushes for more accountability while offering opportunities for flexibility. This manual was designed to help interested parties understand the complex requirements of Title I and the dramatic revisions of Chapter 1. It highlights the areas of flexibility and simplicity found in specific statutory provisions and explains how local educational agencies and schools may take advantage of additional funding, administrative flexibility, and practical opportunities for the improved delivery of educational services. The guide explains the requirements imposed on the state and local educational agencies and defines exactly which federal funds can be used by these agencies for what purposes. Nine chapters address the following areas: (1) state and local planning requirements; (2) assessments for Title I programs; (3) implementation of Title I policy; (4) accountability provisions; (5) waivers and other burden-reducing provisions; (6) parental involvement; (7) professional development; (8) equitable participation of children enrolled in private schools; and (9) coordination requirements and fiscal obligations. Two figures are included. The entire Title I statute is contained in the appendix. (LMI)

Book Description
"Once touted as the single best way to measure students from diverse backgrounds, schools, and experiences, standardized college admissions tests are now criticized for being hopelessly biased in favor of traditionally privileged groups. Out of this has emerged the test-optional movement that seeks to allow students to apply to schools without sitting through the rigors of the SAT. This book takes a step back and applies rigorous empirical measurements to these rival claims. Drawing upon the expertise of higher education researchers, admissions officers, enrollment managers, and policy professionals, this edited volume is among the first to investigate the research and policy implications of test-optional practices. It was conceived in response to the editors' frustration with the fragmented and incomplete state of the literature around the contemporary debate on college admissions testing. Many students, teachers, parents, policymakers--frankly, nearly anyone immediately outside the testing industry and college admissions--have little understanding of how admissions tests are used. This lack of transparency has often fueled beliefs that college assessments are biased, misused, or overused. Decades of research on various aspects of testing, such as the predictive validity of assessments, makes a compelling case for their value. But all-too-frequently researchers and admissions officers talk past one another instead of engaging substantively. This collection intends to remedy the situation by bringing these disparate voices together. This book is designed for provosts, enrollment managers, and college admissions officers seeking to strike the proper balance between uniformity and fairness"--
