Book Description
These eight emblematic museums all show their roots in the 18th century European idea of an institution representing the complete development of human culture in a microcosm. Each of the eight chapters here recounts the history of an individual museum by traveling through its entire history on a path to the collections' masterpieces, presented as an easy-to-follow-path of spectacular photographs and captions. Diverse as their present-day collections may be, the purest form of the museum can be seen at the core of each institution, starting with the Vatican Museums; on to the Russian Imperial Collections in the citadel of the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg; in the Hapsburg Collections, assembled in the Kunsthistorisches Museum of Vienna. The Bourbon Collections now in Museo del Prado in Madrid, The Napoleonic dream of "the Universal Museum," leads to the present-day structure of the Louvre in Paris, as well as its counterpart, the British Museum in London, founded to accommodate the marble sculptures from the Parthenon that Lord Elgin brought back from Athens. And finally, the ambition to create a citadel of culture, a new Acropolis of universal knowledge, is fully present in the Prussian museum system built on the Museumsinsel in Berlin and, on a smaller scale, in the Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam. "Great Museums of Europe" recaptures a grand impulse of Western civilization: that our great achievements in art are a story that can and must be preserved in a comprehensive way so that it is told forever.

Book Description
Museums and Centers of Contemporary Art in Central Europe is a comprehensive study of the ecosystem of art museums and centers in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. Focusing on institutions founded after 1989, the book analyses a thirty-year boom in art exhibition space in these regions, as well as a range of socio-political influences and curatorial debates that had a significant impact upon their development. Tracing the inspiration for the increase in art institutions and the models upon which these new spaces were based, Jagodzińska offers a unique insight into the history of museums in Central Europe. Providing analysis of a range of issues, including private and public patronage, architecture, and changing visions of national museums of art, the book situates these newly-founded institutions within their historical, political and museological contexts. Considering whether - and in what ways - they can be said to have a shared regional identity that is distinct from institutions elsewhere, this valuable contribution paints a picture of the region in its entirety from the perspective of new institutions of art. Offering the first comprehensive study on the topic, Museums and Centers of Contemporary Art in Central Europe should be of great interest to academics, researchers and postgraduate students engaged in the study of museums, art, history and architecture.

Book Description
Western European Museums and Visual Persuasion is an assessment of the visual persuasiveness of art museums. It demonstrates that museums are as capable of influence as speeches or advertisements are and that an awareness of this influence provides an insight into museums’ cultural roles. The book considers a diverse array of institutions ranging from such national cultural icons as the Louvre, the British Museum, and the Prado to museums of partisan advocacy such as the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Tate Modern, and the Museo Nacional Centro Arte de Reina Sofia. The museums’ architectural significance, the importance of their collections, and the persuasiveness of their exhibition designs are the bases for assessment. Western European Museums and Visual Persuasion is an important extension of theories of persuasion and visual communication to art, art history, and museology. It utilizes a theory of visual signs based on the semiotics of C. S. Peirce to demonstrate that museum buildings, the art within them, and the spaces used for display all may be thought as ways of influencing society.
