Book Description
Excerpt from Graphic Methods for Presenting Facts We daily see facts presented in the hope of creating interest and action for some really worthy piece Of work to benefit the people as a whole. In many of these cases the attitude Of the person presenting the matter seems to be that the facts will speak for themselves and that they need little or no assistance. Ordinarily, facts do not speak for themselves. When they do speak for themselves, the wrong conclu sions are Often drawn from them. Unless the facts are presented in a clear and interesting manner, they are about as effective as a phono graph record with the phonograph missing. If it were more generally realized how much depends upon the method of presenting facts, as compared with the facts themselves, there would be a great increase in the use of the graphic methods of presentation. Unlimited numbers Of reports, magazines, and news papers are now giving us reams Of quantitative facts. If the facts were put in graphic form, not only would there be a great saving in the time Of the readers but there would be infinite gain to society, because more facts could be absorbed and with less danger Of mis interpretation. Graphic methods usually require no more space than is needed if the facts are presented in the form Of words. In many cases, the graphic method requires less space than is required for words and there is, besides, the great advantage that with graphic methods facts are presented so that the reader may make deductions Of his own, while when words are used the reader must usually accept the ready-made conclusions handed to him. Book Description
From the PREFACE. IN the preparation of this book there has been a constant effort to present the subject to suit the point of view of the business man, the social worker, and the legislator. Mathematics have been entirely eliminated. Technical terms are used practically not at all. Since the readers whom it is most desired to reach are those who have never had any statistical training, consistent effort has been made to keep the whole book on such a plane that it may be found readable and useful by anyone dealing with the complex facts of business or government. Though written primarily for the non-technical man, it is hoped that this book may, nevertheless, prove convenient to the engineer, the biologist, and the statistician. A definite effort has been made to produce a work which can serve as a hand book for anyone who may have occasional charts to prepare for reports, for magazine illustration, or for advertising. Unfortunately, there are extremely few draftsmen who know how to plot a curve or prepare any kind of a chart from data presented to them in the form of tabulated figures. Most draftsmen can plot a curve if they are given the data and an example showing the general type of chart desired. The executive who desires a chart is usually too busy to stand by a draftsman and explain in detail just how the chart should be prepared as concerns those all important details of proportion, scale, width of line, etc. It is believed that the owner of this book will find it feasible to run through the various chapters and pages until he finds a chart most nearly like that which he desires to have made from his own data. A sample chart placed before any draftsman of average ability should give the draftsman practically all the instruction needed for the preparation of a similar chart from other data. Much careful labor has been expended in so arranging the book that a busy reader may get the gist of the matter by looking at the illustrations and reading only the titles and the sub-titles. The main title under each illustration is intended to show exactly what the chart represents, just as if it were used in some publication relating to the particular subject matter of the chart. The sub-titles relate to method and give criticism of each chart as a whole. Though the text gives much more detailed information concerning method than can possibly be put into any sub-titles, the reader who examines only the illustrations and the titles, without any reference to the text, will undoubtedly get a major portion of the vital material in the book. It is believed that an average reader may go through the illustrations and the titles in about one hour....

Book Description
Excerpt from The Elements of Graphic Statics: And of General Graphic Methods This book is an extension of a course of lectures prepared originally by the authors for students of marine and mechanical engineering and naval architecture in their classes at Webb's Academy and Columbia University. Graphical methods have had their widest application in the analysis of the stresses in stationary structures, and therefore the majority of the text-books on this subject have been written for civil engineers. For the use of students of mechanical and marine engineering, and as of possible service to engin eers in those' professions, this book gives a brief review of the principles of graphics and their application both to framed structures and to mechanism. The text has been illustrated fully by diagrams; occasional references have been furnished to sources of additional information; the principles of Applied Mechanics and of Strength of Materials which are involved in graphic processes have been discussed where necessary; and numerous problems have been assigned to test the students' knowledge of the subject. Book Description
Excerpt from How to Make and Use Graphic Charts The use of graphic methods for accomplishing a great many functions Of the engineer has developed, within recent years, to a most astonish ing degree, - and while this is recognized by a great many persons who have had to make a special study of the subject in their work, it remains a fact that most engineers, and practically all other professional men are largely ignorant of a great deal that may be accomplished by these methods. Book Description
Excerpt from Graphic Charts in Business How to Make and Use Them This book was written as a companion volume to "How to Make and Use Graphic Charts" the large demand for which the author ascribes mainly to the tremendous public interest in the subject. The extraordinary growth in the use of graphic methods which has been, perhaps, more voluminous in the last five years than in the whole period prior to 1917, seems to be due to the fact that three of the main functions of charts can be performed by their use much more rapidly, easily and cheaply, than by any other method. For Computation, whereby many, if not indeed most, of the processes of mathematics can be performed without the labor and often without the knowledge of the mathematics involved; for Recording multitudes of facts of a great variety; and, for the Demonstration of facts in a quantitative way, the graphic chart is the best instrument that has yet been developed. As a consequence, thousands of business concerns have adopted graphics as a standard method for the promotion of greater efficiency in organization, advertising, production control, etc.; colleges and universities are giving special courses in graphic methods; and "graphic service" organizations are springing up for the purpose of making charts for those who need them and cannot learn how to make them fast enough. This, however, is of no great help to the vast majority of business and professional men who either never went to college or who left it long ago, and who, if not too tired, are at least too busy to plunge into a subject which contains many technical questions, and the current literature of which is "shot full of mathematics." To make it easy for the man of business to see when and how graphic methods can best serve his purposes and thus to save him money, time or trouble, is the purpose of this book, and in pursuit of this idea mathematical discussion has been avoided. A great many examples, illustrated by actual charts, have been included as more valuable than elaborate discussions in print. Following the practice in the author's earlier book there is given also a bibliography of the principal books and articles, containing material on business statistics and graphic methods, that have come to notice since 1 the publication of "How to Make and Use Graphic Charts." It is probably inevitable that with the large growth in the use of i charts there is developing an erroneous application of charts to a number of different kinds of business problems. Particularly does this apply in I the use of charts with plain arithmetic ruling, which are best adapted for showing a comparison of absolute numerical quantities, in the place of; the so-called ratio charts which are best adapted for showing a comparison of percentage variations, comparative trends, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
