Excerpt from Gramatica de la Lengua Castellana Destinada al Uso de los Americanos Esto dispuesto a oir con docilidad las objeciones que se agan a lo que en esta gramatica pareciere nuevo; aunque, si bien se mira, se hallara que en eso mismo algunas veces no innovo, sino restauro. La idea, por ejemplo, que yo doy de los casos en la declinacion, es la antigua cunina; y en atribuir la naturaleza de sustantivo al m mitivo, no hago mas que desenvolver una idea erfectamente enunciada en Prisciano Vim nominis abet verbum infinitum dico enim bonum est legere, ut si dicam bona est lectio. No he querido, sin embargo, apoyarme en autoridades, porque para mi la sola irrecusable en lo tocante a una lengua es la lengua misma. Yo no me creo autorizado para dividir lo que ella constantemente une, ni para identificar lo que ella distingue. No miro las analogias de otros idiomas sino como pruebas accesorias. Acepto las practicas como la len ua las presenta; sin imaginarias eli sis, sin otras explicaciones que las que se reducen a ustrar el uso por el uso.
