Book Description
A media ecologist's view of the US's love affair with television and its effects on social and familial structures, as well as her impassioned arguments for turning the TV off. Pawlowski (speech communication, U. of Northern Colorado) outlines, for the general reader, the problems with television programming for regular viewers and, particularly, their families. She traces the history of TV viewing, including how programs have changed and what societal values this reflects or creates; the many roles the TV now fulfills that were previously occupied by people (family manager, gender mentor, sexual advisor, hero, friend, etc.); and what the future holds and how people may wean themselves from watching. A Matrix of Meanings (Engaging Culture)
Author: Craig Detweiler
Publisher: Baker Books
ISBN: 1585583324
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 352
Book Description
From the glittering tinsel of Hollywood to the advertising slogan you can't get out of your head, we are surrounded by popular culture. In A Matrix of Meanings Craig Detweiler and Barry Taylor analyze aspects of popular culture and ask, What are they doing? What do they represent? and What do they say about the world in which we live? Rather than deciding whether Bono deserves our admiration, the authors examine the phenomenon of celebrity idolization. Instead of deciding whether Nike's "Just do it" campaign is morally questionable, they ask what its success reflects about our society. A Matrix of Meanings is a hip, entertaining guide to the maze of popular culture. Plentiful photos, artwork, and humorous sidebars make for delightful reading. Readers who distrust popular culture as well as those who love it will find useful insight into developing a Christian worldview in a secular culture.

Structural Analysis of Historical Constructions: Anamnesis, Diagnosis, Therapy, Controls
Author: Koen Van Balen
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1317206622
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 1879
Book Description
Structural Analysis of Historical Constructions. Anamnesis, diagnosis, therapy, controls contains the papers presented at the 10th International Conference on Structural Analysis of Historical Constructions (SAHC2016, Leuven, Belgium, 13-15 September 2016). The main theme of the book is “Anamnesis, Diagnosis, Therapy, Controls”, which emphasizes the importance of all steps of a restoration process in order to obtain a thorough understanding of the structural behaviour of built cultural heritage. The contributions cover every aspect of the structural analysis of historical constructions, such as material characterization, structural modelling, static and dynamic monitoring, non-destructive techniques for on-site investigation, seismic behaviour, rehabilitation, traditional and innovative repair techniques, and case studies. The knowledge, insights and ideas in Structural Analysis of Historical Constructions. Anamnesis, diagnosis, therapy, controls make this book of abstracts and the corresponding, digital full-colour conference proceedings containing the full papers must-have literature for researchers and practitioners involved in the structural analysis of historical constructions.

Introduction to Differential and Algebraic Topology
Author: Yu.G. Borisovich
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401719594
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 500
Book Description
Topology as a subject, in our opinion, plays a central role in university education. It is not really possible to design courses in differential geometry, mathematical analysis, differential equations, mechanics, functional analysis that correspond to the temporary state of these disciplines without involving topological concepts. Therefore, it is essential to acquaint students with topo logical research methods already in the first university courses. This textbook is one possible version of an introductory course in topo logy and elements of differential geometry, and it absolutely reflects both the authors' personal preferences and experience as lecturers and researchers. It deals with those areas of topology and geometry that are most closely related to fundamental courses in general mathematics. The educational material leaves a lecturer a free choice in designing his own course or his own seminar. We draw attention to a number of particularities in our book. The first chap ter, according to the authors' intention, should acquaint readers with topolo gical problems and concepts which arise from problems in geometry, analysis, and physics. Here, general topology (Ch. 2) is presented by introducing con structions, for example, related to the concept of quotient spaces, much earlier than various other notions of general topology thus making it possible for students to study important examples of manifolds (two-dimensional surfaces, projective spaces, orbit spaces, etc.) as topological spaces, immediately.

The Electric Guitar Sourcebook
Author: Dave Hunter
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1476853487
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 372
Book Description
Why does an electric archtop sound so different from a solidbody guitar when they have the same strings and pickups? Why does Eric Clapton use a vibrato Stratocaster with the vibrato arm removed and the mechanism blocked off with a piece of wood? Why does a strings-through-body guitar sound brighter than an instrument with the strings anchored at the bridge? The sound of an electric guitar is the sum of many parts. Every component, from the wood in the neck to the metal in the tuners and everything in between – including the amount of air in the body – affects the overall tone of an instrument. In this book, Dave Hunter looks at the development of the electric guitar since the earliest instruments in the late 1930s, and how, since then, guitar makers and players have sought to define and refine all the elements that create a guitar's tone. This book includes: analysis of the different components that make up a guitar and how each affects the sound of an instrument; chapter-by-chapter breakdown of the main body types, their characteristics, and their strengths and weaknesses; in-depth specifications of over 70 guitars; interviews with significant people in the guitar-making world; audio examples of many of the guitar sounds described in the book. By looking at all the variables involved, this book will set you, the player, on the road to achieving that sound you've always wanted.
