The Great Convergence
Author: Richard Baldwin
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 067466048X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 340
Book Description
An Economist Best Book of the Year A Financial Times Best Economics Book of the Year A Fast Company “7 Books Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Says You Need to Lead Smarter” Between 1820 and 1990, the share of world income going to today’s wealthy nations soared from twenty percent to almost seventy. Since then, that share has plummeted to where it was in 1900. As the renowned economist Richard Baldwin reveals, this reversal of fortune reflects a new age of globalization that is drastically different from the old. The nature of globalization has changed, but our thinking about it has not. Baldwin argues that the New Globalization is driven by knowledge crossing borders, not just goods. That is why its impact is more sudden, more individual, more unpredictable, and more uncontrollable than before—which presents developed nations with unprecedented challenges as they struggle to maintain reliable growth and social cohesion. It is the driving force behind what Baldwin calls “The Great Convergence,” as Asian economies catch up with the West. “In this brilliant book, Baldwin has succeeded in saying something both new and true about globalization.” —Martin Wolf, Financial Times “A very powerful description of the newest phase of globalization.” —Larry Summers, former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury “An essential book for understanding how modern trade works via global supply chains. An antidote to the protectionist nonsense being peddled by some politicians today.” —The Economist “[An] indispensable guide to understanding how globalization has got us here and where it is likely to take us next.” —Alan Beattie, Financial Times

What Is In A Rim?
Author: Arif Dirlik
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000009858
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 301
Book Description
In this volume, scholars question the current euphoria over the rapid growth of the Pacific rim - as an economic region and as a political ideal. They suggest that much of the discourse on the region is highly ideological, focusing on its potential for capitalist development while ignoring the limitations of such development, its human costs and consequences. This critique of the idea of a Pacific rim also seeks to redress the balance by focusing on the region in terms of human interactions.

Book Description
Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The object of the research is the national economy of Ukraine. The subject of the thesis is the economic growth under conditions of globalization. The purpose of the research is to identify the impact of globalization factors on the economic growth of Ukraine and to develop on this basis main guidelines for foreign economic policy which needs improving. Research techniques are the method of logical abstraction, systematic approach, historical method, deductive method, monographic method, comparative approach, typology, economic and statistical analysis, retrospective analysis, econometric methods such as regression analysis, least squares method and methods of testing statistical hypothesis. The actual data for this paper are based on official Ukrainian and foreign statistical databases including State committee of Statistics of Ukraine (SCSU), National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), International monetary fund (IMF), World Bank (WB), committees of United Nations organization, World trade organization (WTO), the US National bureau of economic research (NBER), Ukrainian and foreign publications, proceedings of international conferences. All econometric computations are performed by means of EVeiws and MS Excel software. In the issue of the research globalization indicators influencing economic growth in Ukraine are developed. They include openness of Ukrainian economy to trade in goods and services (general and according to its structure), openness to financial globalization (FDI and portfolio investment flows, external debt, and international reserves as a share of GDP), growth rates of world and Russian GDP, world price indexes on oil and metals, index of economic freedom of Ukraine. The impact of these indicators on economic growth is defined and mathematically proven. Of all abovementioned indicators the following proved to be statistically significant: openness to trade in ferrous and non-ferrous metals, in machinery, in services, growth rates of Russian GDP and world oil price index. These results show that main orientations of foreign economic policy of our country should be differentiation of foreign trade structure, development of market institutions, improvement of FDI attracting schemes, development of equity market and sever restriction of shadow economy. Labour Questions in the Global South
Author: Praveen Jha
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9813346353
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 496
Book Description
This book provides a focus on some of the main markers and challenges that are at the core of the study of structural transformations in contemporary capitalism and their implications for labour in the Global South. It examines the diverse perspectives and regional and social variations that characterise labour relations as a result of the uneven development which is an important facet of the intensification of capitalist accumulation.. The book provides important insights into the impact of the crises of capitalism on the wellbeing of labour at different historical junctures. Some of the issues covered by it include the conditions of work, and the changing composition of laboring classes and/or working people. The chapters also throw light on the multiple trajectories in the development of labour relations and employment in the Global South, especially after the ascendancy and domination of neoliberal finance capitalism. Some of the major aspects considered by the essays include the decentering of production and development of global value systems, crisis of social reproduction, and the rising informalisation of work.
