How neoliberalism and the politics of respectability are transforming African American manhood While single-sex public schools face much criticism, many Black communities see in them a great promise: that they can remedy a crisis for their young men. Black Boys Apart reveals triumphs, hope, and heartbreak at two all-male schools, a public high school and a charter high school, drawing on Freeden Blume Oeur’s ethnographic work. We meet young men who felt their schools empowered and emasculated them, parents who were frustrated with co-ed schools, teachers who helped pave the road to college, and administrators who saw in Black male academies the advantages of privatizing education. While the two schools have distinctive histories and ultimately charted different paths, they were both shaped by the convergence of neoliberal ideologies and a politics of Black respectability. As Blume Oeur reveals, all-boys education is less a school reform initiative and instead joins a legacy of efforts to reform Black manhood during periods of stark racial inequality. Black male academies join long-standing attempts to achieve racial uplift in Black communities, but in ways that elevate exceptional young men and aggravate divisions within those communities. Black Boys Apart shows all-boys schools to be an odd mix of democratic empowerment and market imperatives, racial segregation and intentional sex separation, strict discipline and loving care. Challenging narratives that endorse these schools for nurturing individual resilience in young Black men, this perceptive and penetrating ethnography argues for a holistic approach in which Black communities and their allies promote a collective resilience.

Men have lower life expectancy than women; they account for 90% of the incarcerated population; they die more often in traffic accidents, from alcohol and drug consumption, and they commit more suicides than women. Since that information has been accessible for a long time, why is it not taken into account when campaigns are created and actions are defined? Violence is not an ‘entity’: it is male. Confronted with that reality, the author sought to formulate the question orientating towards the following working hypothesis: this ‘common knowledge’ should be forgotten, given that the involvement of men in situations of violence plays an important role in the preservation of political ideation in contemporary societies. During this study it became clear that men are exposed to a more complex type of death than mere physical death, but just as important, which is relative to their social representation. This insight led to understanding other aspects that could be associated with men’s intense involvement in situations of violence. Could it be that in contemporary culture a purpose is served by keeping men involved with situations of violence? If so, what might that be?

Shakesqueer puts the most exciting queer theorists in conversation with the complete works of William Shakespeare. In 1965 a Soviet emissary was sent to Memphis, Tennessee, to create social anarchy by exploiting the civil rights movement and fund the war in Southeast Asia through the sale of drugs. With racial tensions mounting due to the integration of the citys high schools, a retired newspaper reporter challenges Henry Murphy, a less-than-stellar white student at Central High School, to write socially significant articles for the school newspaper. Henry, impassioned by his mentors encouragement, writes so honestly about the chaotic world around him that his work, especially what doesnt get published, causes him to lose his girlfriend, get suspended from school, become a person of interest to the FBI, fight with Trifecta, and befriend the only hippie girl at his conservative school. For Henry and Trifecta, the irrepressible social pressures to survive integration during the racially volatile garbage strike that will forever change the face of the city and the civil rights movement bring them together, move them to sacrifice, and ultimately force them from their adolescent oblivion.
