Book Description
Excerpt from Petersburg National Military Park Starting June 25, a Pennsylvania regiment, com posed chicfly of coal miners, dug a tunnel 511 feet in length and placed a 4-ton charge of powder be neath Pegram's Confederate battery. It was hoped that the explosion would destroy the bat tery and make a gap in the line through which the Federals could rush columns to take Peters burg. Careful plans were made by the Federals, and men were assembled for the attack, but at the time of the explosion improper execution of orders and confusion caused the venture to fail. In order to weaken the defense, an attack was made on the Confederate lines southeast of Richmond 2 days before the mine was to be exploded. As Grant expected, Lee rushed the greater part of his forces north of the James, which lef t less than men for the protection of Petersburg. Book Description
Excerpt from Gettysburg and Lincoln: The Battle, the Cemetery, and the National Park The principal sources of my information concern ing the battle are to be found in the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. Other sources are sufficiently indicated in the foot-notes. In the preparation of the part of the work pertaining to the cemetery and President Lincoln's address, I am indebted to the late Hon. John Hay, Secretary of State, and especially to an article in the Century Magazine by Mr. John G. Nicolay, President Lincoln's private secretary. Much material for an account of the development of the National Park was found in Vanderslice's History of the Gettysburg Battle-field Memorial Association, and in the annual reports of the Gettysburg National Park Commission.
