There have been few studies involving the evaluation of stomata density in soybean and in particular delailded studies of a large number of cultivars within a given maturity group compared with other groups. Inheritance studies have been reported on stomata number and size for several crops but not in soybean. Several studies analyzing and evaluating the relationship between field components of the soybean plant have been reported but none ivolved stomata or leaf characteristics. A knowledge of the genetic variability existent between and within genopattern of the stomata and leaf characterisistics and their relationship with other plant components would be of great value for theoretical and practical breeding puposes.
