Category : Oil pollution of the sea
Languages : en
Pages : 138
Book Description
Presents an ordered sequence of studies to provide investigation of spills-of-opportunity (accidental oil spills). Recommended studies are based on following spilled oil from its point of release through to its subsequent fate and behaviour, on its biological effects, and on to the steps taken to control and remove it. Evaluation of countermeasures are recommended because such work has largely been excluded from previous spills-of-opportunity proposals. Whereas not all significant oil spill events will be amenable to study, the following specific topics are suggested for examination when circumstances allow: a. Fate and behaviour, b. Biological studies, c. Countermeasures.

Evaluation of Hovercraft for Dispersant Application
Author: D.F. Dickins Associates
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Dispersing agents
Languages : en
Pages : 88
Book Description
Field trials carried out in Vancouver in 1986. Critical questions were the ability of hovercraft to fly over oil slicks at high speed without displacing the oil out of path, potential of hovercaraft to impart vertical mixing energy into water col umn to aid dispersion process and ability to mount suitable spray boom & obtain uniform spray pattern across swath width. Positive answers to first and last questions were obtained. There does not appear to be any significant long term vertical mixing in hovercraft wake.

Surficial Geology Surveys on the Scotian Shelf
Author: Daniel Plasse
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Coast changes
Languages : en
Pages : 126
Book Description
An index has been compiled of more than 200 surficial geology surveys that have been conducted on the Scotian Shelf. The co-ordinates for about 7,000 sample stations and 70,000 line kilometres of shallow seismic profiles have been plotted on four separate basemaps for the Scotian Shelf. Sources for the compilation include the Government of Canada, the oil and gas industry, various universities, and foreign agencies. Only 36 of the surveys are not in the public domain.

Effect of Seismic Energy on Snow Crab (Chionoecetes Opilio)
Author: John Robert Christian
Publisher: [Calgary] : Environmental Studies Research Funds
ISBN:
Category : Marine animals
Languages : en
Pages : 120
Book Description
Concern has been expressed by commercial fishermen that seismic surveys may affect the health and/or behaviour of snow crab. This study examines the effects of seismic survey air gun noise on snow crab & snow crab catches. The study investigated a number of health, behavioural, & reproductive variables before, during, & after seismic shooting in a preliminary attempt to assess potential effects on physical, biochemical, or activity patterns in subject crabs. The study site was Conception Bay, Newfoundland, an area considered to be typical prime crab grounds. Fishing experiments were conducted in a controlled manner using standard & modified crab traps, with seven sets prior to shooting and six afterward. Crab movement & behaviour after exposure to air gun shots was monitored for caged crabs by video camera and for transmitter-tagged crabs by hydrophones. Caged crabs were also exposed to air gun shots at various depths and were sampled to assess potential indicators of stress & physical damage, in comparison to control crabs not exposed to shots. An important component of that study was to determine if lethal effects occurred three months after exposure. Results of this research are presented & discussed and direct effects on crab physiology are summarized.

Beaufort Sea Extreme Wave Studies Assessment
Author: M. Alan Murray
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Beaufort Sea
Languages : en
Pages : 118
Book Description
In this study, the two most recently publicly available hindcast studies for the Beaufort Sea have been reviewed. The studies, conducted respectively by Hydrotechnology and Seaconsult, differ markedly in their treatment of the storm windfields and the available fetch length. Consequently, there is a considerable disparity between their estimate of extreme wave heights for deep water conditions, although for shallow water the agreement is more favourable. A systematic assessment of their respective methodologies indicated factors which would help to undo some of the conservatism in the Seaconsult estimates and warrant a slight increase in the Hydrotechnology results.
