He joined the Confederate Army in 1861. After the war, he married his cousin, Arrena (Rene) Noble, daughter of James and Polly Turner Noble. They had thirteen children all born in Breathitt County. Wash and Rene, with their younger children, moved to Wolfe County, Kentucky, in 1903, and to Seligman, Missouri, in 1906.
