This book makes good background reading for much of modern magnetospheric physics. Its origin was a Festspiel for Professor Jim Dungey, former professor in the Physics Department at Imperial College on the occasion of his 90th birthday, 30 January 2013. Remarkably, although he retired 30 years ago, his pioneering and, often, maverick work in the 50’s through to the 70’s on solar terrestrial physics is probably more widely appreciated today than when he retired. Dungey was a theoretical plasma physicist. The book covers how his reconnection model of the magnetosphere evolved to become the standard model of solar-terrestrial coupling. Dungey’s open magnetosphere model now underpins a holistic picture explaining not only the magnetic and plasma structure of the magnetosphere, but also its dynamics which can be monitored in real time. The book also shows how modern day simulation of solar terrestrial coupling can reproduce the real time evolution of the solar terrestrial system in ways undreamt of in 1961 when Dungey’s epoch-making paper was published. Further contributions on current Earth magnetosphere research and space plasma physics included in this book show how Dungey’s basic ideas have remained explanative 50 years on. But the Festspiel also introduced some advances that possibly Dungey had not foreseen. One of the contributions presented in this book is on the variety of magnetospheres of the solar system which have been seen directly during the space age, discussing the variations in spatial scale and reconnection time scale and comparing them in respect of Earth, Mercury, the giant planets as well as Ganymede.

Up to now, most studies were carried out assuming azimuthally symmetric currents, neglecting the well established longitudinal asymmetry in the geomagnetic disturbance at low- and mid-latitudes during magnetic storms. The asymmetric perturbations superposed upon a symmetric field depression has been attributed by several authors to a a longitudinally limited, partial ring current with field aligned closure through the auroral ionosphere (Cummings; Fukushima and Kamide; and references therein). It has been the objective of the research covered by this report to study the effects of such magnetospheric current systems on the propagation of cosmic ray particles through the domain of the earth's magnetosphere. The corresponding results were expected to demonstrate the significance of cosmic ray measurements as an additional tool for magnetospheric studies, especially in modeling the disturbed magnetic field in the magnetosphere. In this report, first the approach to the problem is reviewed in Section 2, and examples of the basic tools needed in the procedure are illustrated in Section 3. Then, in Section 4, the results of a simple study correlating local perturbations in the geomagnetic field with cosmic ray cutoff rigidity variations are discussed. Section 5 contains a summary of a detailed quantitative analysis on the effects of a partial ring current and of field-aligned currents on both cutoff rigidities and asymptotic directions in different latitude regions. In conclusions, the significance of the results obtained in the entire study is discussed in Section 6 for both magnetospheric and cosmic ray research.

The ionosphere is an important source of plasma in the magnetosphere, especially during geomagnetic storms. While satellite data has confirmed this population of ions, their effect on the dynamics of the magnetosphere-ionosphere (MI) system is not well understood. Global simulations play an important role in the understanding of geospace and allow the response of the MI system to ionospheric ions to be systematically investigated. This thesis focuses on the effect of ionospheric outflow on the strength and mode of magnetospheric convection. Models for transversely accelerated O+ outflow are implemented into a multifluid adaptation of the Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry (LFM) global simulation using empirical relationships which relate downward electromagnetic and particle power to an upwards flux of O+ ions. The effect of a cusp O+ ouflow on the strength of magnetospheric convection, as measured by the cross polar cap potential (CPCP), is examined for a moderate geomagnetic storm. The response of the CPCP to the O+ outflow is found to depend upon two competing factors. The reduction in ionospheric conductance when outflow is present increases the CPCP and the inflation of the magnetosphere due to an O+-enhanced ring current decreases the CPCP. Through controlled global simulations of geopsace it is shown that ionospheric O+ ions can generate 2-4 hour, planetary-scale, sawtooth oscillations. If the outflow fluence is above a threshold, convection transitions from a quasi-steady mode to the quasi-periodic sawtooth mode. The O+ ions promote sawtooth oscillations by reducing the nightside reconnection potential, which results in the increase of open flux to an unstable level, and by generating an outward force balance in the plasma sheet, which stretches the nightside field lines and facilitates plasmoid formation. This behavior has not previously been captured by a global simulation and represents a major breakthrough in the understanding of the dynamics of convection in the magnetosphere.
