Book Description
The Harvard List of Books in Psychology was first compiled in the 1930s, when each student in the department enjoyed the luxury of an individual tutorial. Together tutor and student could map out a course of reading. By 1938, the list had proved so useful that its 349 titles were annotated and printed, though mainly for local consumption. Growth of an outside demand from students, librarians, and the reading public led to a supplement in 1944 and a number of successive editions bearing the present title. The present edition updates the List without expanding it beyond useful size: for each new title the compilers have faithfully tried to delete one, and new entries account for almost half of the present total of 744. Each title is annotated with descriptive and evaluative material.

Book Description
Current trends in morbidity suggest that by the beginning of the twen ty-first century, psychiatric illness may become the most pressing problem in public health in many of the advanced countries. As ably demonstrated by Vandenberg, Singer, and Pauls, the principal identifia ble etiology of the major psychiatric disorders is heredity; if progress is to be made in prevention and treatment of these disorders, it may have to come from improved understanding of their inheritance. A relentless increase has been observed in the frequency of mood disorders, primarily major depression but also manic-depressive ill ness, appearing earlier and more frequently in each age cohort born since (approximately) 1940. Because major depression is a recurrent disorder, whose episodes increase in frequency with age, the number of observed depressions can be expected to increase dramatically as these people reach middle and old age. The rate of suicide has also increased enormously, according to birth cohort. Starting with people born around 1935, the rate of suicide between 15 and 19 years of age has increased more than 10 times from the earliest to the most recent birth cohorts. What is not clear is if there will be a compensatory reduction in suicide rate as this cohort ages, because people likely to commit suicide will have done so earlier, or if this presages a general increase in suicide, comparable to the increase in mood disorders and perhaps a function of them.

Book Description
This volume brings together theory, research and development in cognitive neuro-science. It investigates the neural processes involved in cognition and learning, using developments in computer technology to study the brain in action and other topographic brain mapping. Electrical activity patterns of the brain in the learning processes are displayed through these techniques. Part 1 delineates neuroscience application to educational perspectives. Part 2 reports on emotional and learning disorders, such as autism, while Part 3 applies cognitive science to educational and mental health, as well as to settings such as the classroom, rehabilitation centre or doctor’s office.

Book Description
In the autumn of 1957, Stanley R. Dean proposed the creation of a founda tion on schizophrenia to a group of friends. The purpose was to bring the illness of schizophrenia before the public's attention and out of the shameful anonymity in which it was buried. Stanley Dean recognized the major public health importance of this illness and was determined to have an impact on it during his lifetime. By December of that year, the decision was made to create an organization called Research in Schizophrenia Endowment (RISE). Within less than two months articles of incorporation for RISE were issued by the State of Connecticut. By the latter part of March 1958, Dean was successful in getting Congress to provide $1,300,000 for research into schizophrenia. This was the first time that Congress had targeted funds specifically for research on this disorder. Within a year, by April 1959, Dr. Dean was instrumental in getting Congress to increase its appro priation to the NIMH by more than $8,000,000 with the specific instruction that approximately one-half of the total research funds of the NIMH be used for projects relating to schizophrenia. In the spring of 1960, RISE relinquished its corporate charter and became an integral part of the Research Foundation of the National Association for Mental Health. This merger occurred before RISE had implemented its planned annual award program for outstanding research in schizophrenia. Several members of the Board of Directors of RISE, under the leadership of Dr. James G.
