Book Description

Book Description
The thesis of this book is threefold. First, contrary to the increasingly popular understanding that the nature of Ham's offense was sexual, we argue that this offense was nonsexual, despite the presence of the phrase ("to see the nakedness of") in Genesis 9:22. More specifically, Ham's offense had less to do with seeing his father naked--the seeing was accidental. Rather, his fault lay with his choice to disclose to his brothers what he had seen as opposed to covering the nakedness of his father. Second, the most probable fulfillment of the Noah's curse is (1) the servitude of the Gibeonites; (2) the enslavement of the Canaanites following the conquest; or (3) the dominance of Rome and Greece over Tyre and Carthage, respectively. the events or phenomena least associated with the curse, in our view, are the following: (1) the service of the four kings in Genesis 14 under Chedorlaomer and the king of Tidal; (2) the subjection of the Egyptians and Babylonians by the Persians; (3) the forced corvée service of the Egyptians by Pharaoh; (4) the triumph of Israel over Egypt during the Exodus; (5) the enslavement of the Africans; and (6) the African's dark skin color. Third, whereas none of the proposals offered in regards to the phrase ("let him dwell in the tents of Shem") correlate well with the exegesis of the blessing utterance, we did find a viable candidate among the proposals related to the enlargement of Japheth, viz "geographical expansion."

Book Description
Incorrectly attributed to Jonathan ben Uzziel, this Targum, part of the Palestinian Targums, has been call Pseudo-Jonathan to rectify this mistaken identification. Pseudo-Jonathan provides us with a translation of almost every verse of the Pentateuch. Unique from other Targums of the Pentateuch in many ways, this Targum is also very much a composite work, but one composed with skill and initiative.

Book Description
Ancient peoples regarded names as indicative of character and destiny. The Jews were no exception. This is a critical study of ancient exegesis of the title `Israel' and the meanings attributed to it among Jews down to Talmudic times, along with some early Christian materials. C. T. R. Hayward explores ancient etymologies of `Israel', and the utilization of these very varied explanations of the name in sustained works of exegesis like Jubilees; the writings of Ben Sira, Philo, andJosephus; and selected Rabbinic texts including Aramaic Targumim. He also examines translational works like the Septuagint, to illuminate those writings' sense of what it meant to be a Jew.

Book Description
The capstone of a research endeavor begun by Barbara Stein and Stanley Stein nearly sixty years ago, this volume concludes their masterful tetralogy on Spanish economic and Atlantic history. With a compelling narrative that weaves together story and thesis and brings to life immense archival research and empirical data, Crisis in an Atlantic Empire is a finely grained historical tour of the period covering 1808 to 1810, which is often called “the age of revolutions.” The study examines an accumulation of countervailing elements in a spasm of imperial crisis, as Spain and its major colony New Spain struggled to preserve traditional structures of exchange—Spain's transatlantic trade system—with Caribbean ports at Veracruz and Havana in wartime after 1804. Rooted in the struggle between businessmen seeking to expand their economic reach and the ruling class seeking to maintain its hegemonic control, the crisis sheds light on the contest between free trade and monopoly trade and the politics of preservation among an enduring and influential interest group: merchants. Reflecting the authors’ masterful use of archival sources and their magisterial knowledge of the era’s complex metropolitan and colonial institutions, this volume is the capstone of a research endeavor spanning nearly sixty years.
