Mosaic of Autoimmunity
Author: Carlo Perricone
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 012814307X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 728
Book Description
The Mosaic of Autoimmunity: The Novel Factors of Autoimmune Diseases describes the multifactorial origin and diversity of expression of autoimmune diseases in humans. The term implies that different combinations of factors in autoimmunity produce varying and unique clinical pictures in a wide spectrum of autoimmune diseases. Most of the factors involved in autoimmunity can be categorized into four groups: genetic, immune defects, hormonal and environmental factors. In this book, the environmental factors are reviewed, including infectious agents, vaccines as triggers of autoimmunity, smoking and its relationship with rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, thyroid disease, multiple sclerosis and inflammatory bowel diseases. An entirely new syndrome, the autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA), is also included, along with other diseases that are now recognized as having an autoimmune etiopathogenesis.

Genetics of Autoimmunity
Author: Gregory R. Bock
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 9780470021378
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 264
Book Description
This title provides an extremely helpful analysis of genes that may be associated with autoimmunity, and answers questions such as how these genes can be identified, and how the functions of the gene products can be elucidated. Incorporating data on disease-associated chromosomal loci that has been accumulated from inbred mice, the title: descibes how some susceptibility loci may be common to many diseases, whereas others are relatively disease specific discusses the importance of developing criteria for establishing the significance of these different categories of disease-associated loci.

Gene Therapy of Autoimmune Disease
Author: Gerald J. Prud'homme
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9780306479915
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 149
Book Description
Autoimmune diseases are diverse and responsible for considerable morbidity. Their etiology remains largely unknown, and current therapy with anti-inflammatory drugs is prone to adverse effects, and rarely curative. New therapies with anti-cytokine antibodies or receptors are promising, but require frequent administration of expensive protein drugs. Gene Therapy of Autoimmune Diseases comprehensively reviews research in gene therapy for autoimmune diseases with viral or non-viral vectors. Gene therapy offers the possibility of long-term, continuous delivery of a wide variety of immunosuppressive, anti-inflammatory, or tolerance-inducing agents. Moreover, highly specific genetically modified cells can be produced. This book discusses the most promising avenues in this exciting new field.

Genome-Wide Association Studies
Author: Tatsuhiko Tsunoda
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9811381771
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 216
Book Description
This book examines the utility of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in the era of next-generation sequencing and big data, identifies limitations and potential means of overcoming them, and looks to the future of GWAS and what may lay beyond. GWAS are among the most powerful tools for elucidating the genetic aspects of human and disease diversity. In Genome-Wide Association Studies, experts in the field explore in depth the impacts of GWAS on genomic research into a variety of common diseases, including cardiovascular, autoimmune, diabetic, cancer, and infectious diseases. The book will equip readers with a sound understanding both of the types of disease and phenotypes that are suited for GWAS and of the ways in which a road map resulting from GWAS can lead to the realization of personalized/precision medicine: functional analysis, drug seeds, pathway analysis, disease mechanism, risk prediction, and diagnosis.

The Recent Topics in Genetic Polymorphisms
Author: Mahmut Çalışkan
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 1789858917
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 149
Book Description
The book in your hands presents chapters revealing the magnitude of genetic polymorphisms that exist in different kinds of living beings. Natural populations contain a considerable amount of genetic change, which provides a genomic flexibility that can be used as a raw material for adaptation to changing environmental conditions. The analysis of genetic polymorphisms provides information about DNA sequence changes at a given locus. The increasing availability of PCR-based molecular markers allows for the detailed analyses and the detection of genetic changes influencing some important traits. The purpose of this book is to provide a glimpse into the dynamic process of genetic polymorphisms by presenting the thoughts of scientists engaged in the generation of new ideas and techniques employed for the assessment of genetic polymorphisms. The book should prove useful to students, researchers and experts in the area of molecular genetics.

Genetics of Rare Autoimmune Diseases
Author: Javier Martín
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 303003934X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 244
Book Description
The main aim of this volume is to provide an updated overview of the genetic basis of a group of complex disorders that are considered rare individually, but show a relatively high prevalence on the whole in developed countries: the rare autoimmune diseases. These are chronic disorders that involve long and expensive treatments with considerable side effects that may dramatically reduce the quality of life of affected people. Therefore, shedding light into their pathologic mechanisms is a major concern given their growing social and economic awareness and impact. General sections include different chapters on single entities as systemic lupus and sclerosis, Behçet’s disease, Sjogren’s syndrome and polymiositis, and sections devoted to autoimmune vasculitis, hepatic autoimmune conditions, as well as those affecting the nervous system, and a concluding chapter in which the shared predisposition amongst all diseases is discussed. All the chapters are given a homogeneous scheme in which the authors explain the clinical singularities of every disease and report the recent breakthrough discoveries related to them, giving a critical interpretation and suggesting future perspectives. All contributors are renowned researchers with high expertise in each disease. Due to the exponential increase in our understanding of the genetic causes of these complex diseases, a major advance in biomedical discovery is taking place. However, most of the achievements in this field are very recent and there is a lack of bibliography gathering them together. This book is thus filling a gap and will prove a useful companion to clinicians in the first place (internists, rheumatologists, clinical immunologists, and hematologists) but also to basic and applied researchers.

Thyroid Autoimmunity
Author: A. Pinchera
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 146130945X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 579
Book Description
In 1956, three groups independently reported evidence that some thyroid disease appearing spontaneously in humans or experimentally induced in animals are related to autoimmune processes. The interval between these landmark discoveries and the present has witnessed a remarkable and continuing growth of both knowledge and concepts concerning the mechanisms of immune regulation, the pathogenesis of autoimmune thyroid diseases, and their clinical and laboratory manifestations. More importantly knowledge of thyroid autoimmunity has, in many respects, comprised the vanguard of an ever increasing appreciation and understanding of autoimmune diseases in general. On November 24-26 1986, an International Symposium on Thyroid Autoimmunity was held in Pisa. Its purpose was to commemorate the birth of thyroid autoimmunity as a scientific discipline, to summarize current knowledge and concepts in this area, and where possible, to anticipate areas of opportunity for the future - hence the theme of the Symposium, Memories and Perspectives. To open the meeting, the Magnifico Rettore (Chancellor) of the University of Pisa granted special Awards to Dr. Deborah Doniach, Dr. Ivan Roitt, and Dr. Noel R. Rose, who published the first fundamental studies in the field of thyroid autoimmunity, and to Dr. Duncan G. Adams, whose discovery of the long-acting thyroid stimulator (LATS) opened the door to our current understanding of the pathogenesis of Graves' disease. During the meeting thirty plenary lectures were presented.
