A new approach to the solution of laminar boundary layer equations is presented. This method consists in reducing the fundamental boundary layer equations to a universal form by transferring the parameters expressing the influence of the external conditions, characteristic of each particular problem, to the number of independent variables. The approach is based on the use of the similarity concept generalized in the sense described in the paper. A universal equation, nondependent on a given velocity distribution U(x) on the outer boundary of the boundary layer, is derived and integrated in one-parameter and two-parameter approximations by means of a BESM-2 computer. The generalized similar solutions of the type obtained may be obtained for three-dimensional laminar boundary layers in an incompressible fluid, flows of homogeneous gas, equilibrium dissociating gas flows in magnetohydrodynamic boundary layers in conducting fluid, and also for a turbulent boundary layer. The application of the well-known basic principle of mechanics, the principle of Jourdain, to problems of the theory of the boundary layer leads to an equation from which the equations of Von Karman, Leibenson, and Golubev are derived as special cases. The given equation may be employed in other integral methods. The present paper deals with the method of the variation of the thickness of the boundary layer. A number of new approximate formulas valuable in aerodynamic calculations for the fristion distribution are derived from this procedure. The method has been applied only to laminar boundary layers, but it seems probable that it may be generalized to include turbulent layers as well.

This book deals with the asymptotic behaviours of the solutions of the laminar boundary layer equations, complementary variational principles for unsteady Poiseuille s flow of a viscous incompressible liquid and Kantorovich method for the laminar steady flow of a viscous incompressible and electrically conducting fluid through rectangular porous pipe in presence of a transverse magnetic field. One of the important problems in the study of differential equations is that of describing the nature of the solutions for large positive values of the independent variables and this purpose is completely served by the study of asymptotic behaviours. Variational principles occur widely in physical problems and the approximate methods of the solutions of such problems are often based on associated variational principles. The basic problem of variational principle is a generalization of the elementary theory of maxima and minima of the calculus and is concerned with the determination of a function from an admissible class of functions such that a certain definite integral involving the function and some of its derivatives takes on a extreme value on a closed region.
