Book Description
Excerpt from The University of Texas Record, Vol. 9: June 1, 1909 In behalf of the students of the University of Texas, it is my pleasure to Speak briefly of the late Judge James B. Clark as the students knew and understood him. The hour of our deepest mourning has passed, and time has softened, in some degree, the grief that overwhelmed us. We can now calmly lay aside our sorrow for the moment, and bear impartial testimony to the worth of him who gave the last twenty-five years of his life to the students of this institution. Judge Clark was bv birth and training a college man. His father, a respected and honored citizen of North Carolina, believed in edu cation as a training for that higher and more perfect citizenship. He accordingly gave to his son an Opportunity early in life to enter college. Judge Clark entered Franklin College at the age of twelve, and from there he went to Harvard University. During his course at Harvard. He was universally loved and respected as a student and a friend. This was evidenced by the fact that he was chosen to serve as class orator on the day of his graduation. A duty which he performed with marked credit to himself and with honor to his class, The spirit of earnestness and loyaltv which characterized that address so impressed his classmates that, even now, the few re maining members of his class refer to it as the event which marked the beginning of their loyalty to Harvard.
