Excerpt from Genealogical Sketches of Roger Alling of New Haven, 1639, Gilbert Allen of Morristown, 1736, and Thomas Bancroft of Dedham, 1640, and Some of Their Descendants 1. Gilbert Allen was born in 1736, and married Elizabeth Lindsley The first record of him yet found by me is when with Elizabeth, his wife, he entered into covenant with the First Presbyterian church of Morristown, N.J., July 17, 1761; on Aug. 17, 1761, they with their child Abigail, were baptized by Rev. Timothy Johnes, D. D., and on March 4, 1763, he and his wife were received into the church. On Sept. 12, 1777, he was elected a ruling elder of the church, and remained so until his death. On Dec. 1, 1784 the trustees of the church "Agreed and appointed Deacon Allen to call on the Delinquents in Mr. Johnes' Sallary and urge them to pay of their arears or give notes for the Same, & that he shall make abatements at his Discretion and this Bord will pay him for his Services." On Sept. 29, 1787, he gave "1 dol. & 80 ninetieths" "to the trustees of Nassau Hall, for the education of poor and pious youth." On Mar. 23, 1785, "Deacon Allen Reported" to the trustees "that he had called on the Delinquents in Mr. Johnes Sallary according to the Directions of the Trustees and had taken Notes to the amount of 140, 18, 6 and had received cash to the amount of 1, 6, 3, and that he had spent in doing said Business 9 1/2 days for which Service he charges 7s per day amounting to 3, 6, 6." On Jan. 10, 1787, the trustees again requested him to collect money due from the delinquents. On Sept. 20, 1787, the trustees met "and Agreed to new Shingle the Ends and the South Side of the Ruff of the meeting house," and a subscription paper was drawn up, and the Trustees appointed Deacon Allen to Carry the Subscription through the Congregation for Signers, and this Board will pay him for the same."
