Abstract: The European Union (EU) has dramatically influenced the policies and practices of its newest member states. In this paper I look at the role the EU has had on gender-related work and opportunity policies in Central and Eastern European countries and what affects these policies have had on gender wage gap. I attempt testing hypotheses that these new member states vary (a) in the extent to which they implement gender-related policies and (b) in terms of policy outcomes. First, I complete a contextual analysis to show the various factors that surround the generation of equal pay and opportunity policies in Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovenia throughout the processes of market transition and EU accession. Then, I analyze the gender pay gap within these four countries using International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) data and Social Stratification in Eastern Europe (EESS) data in various cross sections between 1987 and 2004. I find that while the EU has been partially successful in homogenizing the legislation within these countries, there are various factors that may promote or deter implementation. Regarding the gender pay gap, I find considerable cross-national differences, with Poland having the largest gender gap and Slovenia the smallest.
