Book Description
"Only constant observation of civilian Judges and soldier witnesses could have shown me how fallible is the unaided military memory or have led me by three steps to a War Diary- (1) There is nothing certain about war except that one side won't win. (2) The winner is asked no questions-the loser has to answer for everything. (3) Soldiers think of nothing so little as failure and yet, to the extent of fixing intentions, orders, facts, dates firmly in their own minds, they ought to be prepared. Conclusion:-In war, keep your own counsel, preferably in a note-book." This book is part of the World War One Centenary series; creating, collating and reprinting new and old works of poetry, fiction, autobiography and analysis. The series forms a commemorative tribute to mark the passing of one of the world's bloodiest wars, offering new perspectives on this tragic yet fascinating period of human history. Each publication also includes brand new introductory essays and a timeline to help the reader place the work in its historical context.

Book Description
This early work by Herbert Brayley Collett was originally published in 1922 and we are now republishing it as part of our WWI Centenary Series. 'The 28th: A Record of War Service in the Australian Imperial Force, 1915-19' is a work that details the history of the battalion during the First World War. Colonel Collett evidently asked himself: "What do the friends of the men of the Battalion want to know?" They want to know what the men did and what the Battalion did. What was the daily life of the man in the training camp; on the transports; in the war areas, and in the trenches. Of those who fell, they want to know, if possible, how and when they fell and where they were buried. Of those who were wounded, they want to know what they were doing when they "stopped a bullet," and how they were a fterwards treated in hospital or in "Blighty." The public want a brief outline of the great doings of the Battalion, and all these things are plainly and proudly told by the writer. This book is part of the World War One Centenary series; creating, collating and reprinting new and old works of poetry, fiction, autobiography and analysis. The series forms a commemorative tribute to mark the passing of one of the world's bloodiest wars, offering new perspectives on this tragic yet fascinating period of human history. Book Description
This 2-volume book represents a personal account of the Gallipoli Campaign written from the perspective of a British Army officer. The Gallipoli Campaign was a military campaign in the First World War that took place on the Gallipoli peninsula February 1915 to January 1916. The Entente powers, Britain, France and Russia, sought to weaken the Ottoman Empire, one of the Central Powers, by taking control of the straits that provided a supply route to the Russian Empire. The Allies' attack on Ottoman forts at the entrance of the Dardanelles in February 1915 failed and was followed by an amphibious landing on the Gallipoli peninsula in April 1915 to capture the Ottoman capital of Constantinople. In January 1916, after eight months' fighting, with approximately 250,000 casualties on each side, the land campaign was abandoned and the invasion force withdrawn. It was a costly defeat for the Entente powers and for the sponsors, especially First Lord of the Admiralty (1911-1915), Winston Churchill. The campaign was considered a great Ottoman victory._x000D_ Contents:_x000D_ The Start_x000D_ The Straits_x000D_ Egypt_x000D_ Clearing for Action_x000D_ The Landing_x000D_ Making Good_x000D_ Shells_x000D_ Two Corps or an Ally?_x000D_ Submarines_x000D_ A Decision and the Plan_x000D_ Bombs and Journalists_x000D_ A Victory and After_x000D_ K.'s Advice and the P.M.'s Envoy_x000D_ The Force – Real and Imaginary_x000D_ Sari Bair and Suvla_x000D_ Kavak Tepe Attack Collapses_x000D_ The Last Battle_x000D_ Misunderstandings_x000D_ The French Plan_x000D_ Loos and Salonika_x000D_ The Beginning of the End

Book Description
Offering a comprehensive account of the war as more than a purely military phenomenon, this book also addresses its profound social, cultural, and economic implications. Authors use editorials, memoirs, newspaper articles, poems, and letters to recreate the many facets of the war. Technological developments such as the machine gun and barbed wire brought the world trench warfare, which is vividly depicted here in a firsthand account of then-soldier Benito Mussolini.
