Book Description
Most biometric systems employed for human recognition require physical contact with, or close proximity to, a cooperative subject. Far more challenging is the ability to reliably recognize individuals at a distance, when viewed from an arbitrary angle under real-world environmental conditions. Gait and face data are the two biometrics that can be most easily captured from a distance using a video camera. This comprehensive and logically organized text/reference addresses the fundamental problems associated with gait and face-based human recognition, from color and infrared video data that are acquired from a distance. It examines both model-free and model-based approaches to gait-based human recognition, including newly developed techniques where the both the model and the data (obtained from multiple cameras) are in 3D. In addition, the work considers new video-based techniques for face profile recognition, and for the super-resolution of facial imagery obtained at different angles. Finally, the book investigates integrated systems that detect and fuse both gait and face biometrics from video data. Topics and features: discusses a framework for human gait analysis based on Gait Energy Image, a spatio-temporal gait representation; evaluates the discriminating power of model-based gait features using Bayesian statistical analysis; examines methods for human recognition using 3D gait biometrics, and for moving-human detection using both color and thermal image sequences; describes approaches for the integration face profile and gait biometrics, and for super-resolution of frontal and side-view face images; introduces an objective non-reference quality evaluation algorithm for super-resolved images; presents performance comparisons between different biometrics and different fusion methods for integrating gait and super-resolved face from video. This unique and authoritative text is an invaluable resource for researchers and graduate students of computer vision, pattern recognition and biometrics. The book will also be of great interest to professional engineers of biometric systems.

Book Description
Annotation The recognition of humans and their activities from video sequences is a very important and active area of research because of direct applications in video surveillance, design of realistic entertainment systems, multimedia communications, and medical diagnosis. In this lecture, the authors discuss the use of face and gait signatures for human identification and recognition of human activities from video sequences. Face Recognition?methods for image-based analysis.?developments related to the use of video sequences, 3D models, and techniques for representing variations of illumination.?challenges of recognition strategies that are robust to changes due to pose, illumination, disguise, and aging. Gait Recognition?techniques to automatically extract the parameters for representation of human gait, most of which are appearance based.?challenges involved in dealing with changes in viewpoint.?methods based on image synthesis, visual hull, and 3D models. Human Activity Recognition?methods that have been developed in different disciplines like artificial intelligence, image processing, pattern recognition, and computer vision.? complex activities using 2D and 3D deformable shape theory.

Book Description
Human Identification Based on Gait is the first book to address gait as a biometric. Biometrics is now in a unique position where it affects most people's lives. This is especially true of "gait", which is one of the most recent biometrics. Recognizing people by the way they walk and run implies analyzing movement which, in turn, implies analyzing sequences of images, thus requiring memory and computational performance that became available only recently. Human Identification Based on Gait introduces developments from distinguished researchers within this relatively new area of biometrics. This book clearly establishes how human gait is biometric. Human Identification Based on Gait is structured to meet the needs of professionals in industry, as well as advanced-level students in computer science.

Book Description
The term gait recognition is typically used to signify the identification of individuals in image sequences 'by the way they walk'. There is an increased interest in gait as a biometric, ainly due to its non-intrusive as well as non-concealable nature. Considerable research efforts are being devoted in the computer vision community to characterize and extract gait dynamics automatically from video. The objective is to use gait as a filter (or indicator) to effectively enhance the overall recognition performance of a system that uses multiple modalities. In this proposal, we describe two different gait recognition methods; a non-parametric method that uses the self-similarity plot of a walking sequence as the input feature for classification; and a parametric method that estimates the spatiotemporal parameters of gait (the cadence and stride length) and exploits their linear relationship as a cue for identification. Finally, because carried loads are gait-altering, we also present a motion-based method to detect whether a walking person carries an object (load).

Book Description
Nowadays, the technological advances allow developing many applications on different fields. In this book Motion Tracking and Gesture Recognition, two important fields are shown. Motion tracking is observed by a hand-tracking system for surgical training, an approach based on detection of dangerous situation by the prediction of moving objects, an approach based on human motion detection results and preliminary environmental information to build a long-term context model to describe and predict human activities, and a review about multispeaker tracking on different modalities. On the other hand, gesture recognition is shown by a gait recognition approach using Kinect sensor, a study of different methodologies for studying gesture recognition on depth images, and a review about human action recognition and the details about a particular technique based on a sensor of visible range and with depth information.
