Book Description
This new edition of the universally acclaimed and widely-used textbook on fungal biology has been completely re-written, drawing directly on the authors' research and teaching experience. The text takes account of the rapid and exciting progress that has been made in the taxonomy, cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, pathology and ecology of the fungi. Features of taxonomic relevance are integrated with natural functions, including their relevance to human affairs. Special emphasis is placed on the biology and control of human and plant pathogens, providing a vital link between fundamental and applied mycology. The book is richly illustrated throughout with specially prepared drawings and photographs, based on living material. Illustrated life-cycles are provided, and technical terms are clearly explained. Extensive reference is made to recent literature and developments, and the emphasis throughout is on whole-organism biology from an integrated, multidisciplinary perspective.

Book Description
Fungi of Australia Volume 2B: Catalogue and Bibliography of Australian Fungi 2 is an essential reference for taxonomists working on Australian fungi, and anyone who wishes to use up-to-date names of Australian fungi. Together with its companion volume, Fungi of Australia Volume 2A, it lists all the names applied to Australian macrofungi and provides the up-to-date accepted name for each species, along with a comprehensive listing of relevant literature. Volume 2B covers larger fungi in the Basidiomycota, along with the larger Myxomycota. Groups dealt with in this volume include bracket fungi, slime moulds, puffballs, earthballs, earthstars, stinkhorns, birds nest fungi, coral fungi, jelly fungi, polypores, and stereoid, corticioid and thelephoroid fungi. This important work includes entries for more than 1,700 accepted names. For each name the catalogue lists place and date of publication, taxonomic synonyms, cross references to misidentifications and a comprehensive list of all works in which the name has been used in an Australian context. The extensive bibliography contains over 1,800 entries and includes not only taxonomic publications relevant to species described from Australia, but also publications on fungi in relation to forestry, agriculture, ecology, medicine, chemistry and general biology.

Book Description
In this volume the relevance of fungi for agriculture is discussed in four sections. The first one 'Food and Fodder Production' concerns the application and potential of mushrooms, straw enrichment, and food or crop spoilage. The next section 'Mycotoxins and Detoxification' deals with the biosynthesis of mycotoxins and the use of fungi in organopollutant degradation. A large section entitled 'Disease Control, Diagnostic, and Management' covers various aspects of biological control (fungi, insects, and weeds), diagnostics with emphasis on the example of Magnaporthe grisea, and disease management with focus on the important fungal pathogens Phoma, Fusarium, rusts and powdery mildew. The last section 'Update on Host-Parasite Interactions' discusses signal transduction, avirulence determinants, phytotoxins, cell wall degradation, and the coevolution of pathogenic fungi and grass hosts.

Book Description
The intriguing Bird’s Nest Fungi (Nidulariaceae) of forest, meadow, and garden have been familiar to botanists since 1601, but only relatively recently has the significance of their peculiar form been realized. Dr Brodie traces the long controversy that arose when Bird’s Nest Fungi were first classified as seed plants because of the numerous seed-like bodies contained in their small cup-shaped fruit bodies. The ‘seeds’ are now known to contain spores like those of other fungi such as puffballs, to which the Nidulariaceae are related. Present-day research has shown that certain Bird’s Nest Fungi produce chemicals having previously unrecognized molecular structure. Between these milestones Dr Brodie reveals the solution to the mystery of the dispersal of the ‘eggs’ from the ‘bird’s nest’: the fruit bodies are splash guns from which the reproductive spores are ejected by the force of falling raindrops. This explanation of the phenomenon is supported by copious observations and hitherto unpublished experiments. All known species of Nidulariaceae, including many only recently recognized, are described in this volume. All aspects of growth, structure, development, and life-cycle of these fungi, both in nature and in laboratory culture, are reported in a modern, comprehensive treatment of a subject which is of interest not only to mycologists but to amateur naturalists as well.
