The General Session of the Philosophy Section at the 12th World Sanskrit Conference, Helsinki, comprised altogether twenty-two papers, covering Nyaya and Vaisesika, Samkhya and Yoga, as well as Mimamsa and Vedanta with its sub-traditions. Furthermore, there were contributions on the philosophy of the Saiva Siddhanta tradition, on Carvaka and Buddhist philosophy, and on the grammatical philosophy of Bhartrhari. The first part of the book Studies in Indian Philosophy contains nine studies on individual topics and concepts in Indian philosophy from various perspectives, viz., historical-philolo-gical, philosophical and comparative. They are inter alia concerned with such fundamental issues as the characteristic signs of the Self, the concept of Vijnapti-matrata in Vasuban-dhu's Yogacara, the notion of unchanging cognition in the writings of the Kashmirian author Ramakantha, the definition of existence according to the late Buddhist philosopher Jnanasrimitra, and the significance of the sadhanacatustaya in Vedanta. In the second part of the book Studies in the Textual History of Indian Philosophy two papers contribute to the study of the textual history of Indian philosophy, with a focus on the Patanjala-yogasastra and Candrananda's commentary on the Vaisesikasutra.

This book presents a close reading of four Indian narratives from different time periods (epic, Upaniṣadic, pre-modern and contemporary): Ekalavya's story from the Mahābhārata (MBh 1.123.1-39), the story of Prajāpati, Indra and Virochana from the Chāndogya Upanisad (CU 8.7.1-8.12.5), the story of Śankara in the King's body from the Śankaradigvijaya, and A.R. Murugadoss's Hindi film Ghajini (2008), respectively. These stories are thematically juxtaposed with Pātañjala-yoga, namely Patañjali's Yogasūtra and its vast commentarial body. The sūtras reveal hidden philosophical layers. The stories, on the other hand, contribute to the clarification of "philosophical junctions" in the Yogasūtra. Through sūtras and stories, the author explores the question of self-identity, with emphasis on the role of memory and the place of body in identity-formation. Each of the stories diagnoses the connection between self-identity and (at least a sense of) freedom. Employing cutting-edge methodology, crossing the boundaries of literary theory, story-telling, and philosophical reflection, this book presents fresh interpretations of Indian thought. It is useful to specialists in Asian philosophy and culture.

This book offers a comprehensive description of the ‘doctrine of salvation’ (niḥśreyasa/ mokṣa) and Vaiśeṣika, one of the oldest philosophical systems of Indian philosophy and provides an overview of theories in other related Indian philosophical systems and classical doctrines of salvation. The book examines liberation, the fourth goal of life and arguably one of the most important topics in Indian philosophy, from a comparative philosophical perspective. Contextualising classical Greek Philosophy which contains the three goals of life (Aristotle’s Ethics), and explains salvation as first understood in the theology of the Hellenistic and Patristics periods, the author analyses six classical philosophical schools of Indian philosophy in which there is a marked emphasis on the ultimate ontological elements of the world and ‘self’.
