Book Description
A Unique Book. Although Pasteurs Seminal Contributions Are Known, The Background Leading To These Discoveries Has Been Admirably Recapitulated. How Studies To Help Sort The Problems Of Wine And Beer Industry Led To The Recognition Of Micro-Organisms As The Causative Factor, And To The Denunciation Of The Then Prevalent Views On Spontaneous Generation. The Inability Of An Aged Culture Of Fowl Cholera To Cause Disease In Chicken Was Not Dismissed As A Mistake, But Deduced To Make Two Observations Fundamental To Development Of Vaccines, Namely A Method To Attenuate The Virulence Of The Micro-Organisms And The Use Of Such Organisms As Vaccines. The Vaccine For Rabies Was A Landmark At A Time When No Electron Microscope Was Available To Visualize A Virus. Also This Was The First Use Of A Vaccine For Therapeutic Purposes! Pasteur S Heritage, The Institute That He Created And Scientists Who Worked With Him, And After Him, At This Institute Were Responsible For Discovery Of The Bacillus Causing Plague (And Also The Way It Spreads Through Fleas, An Observation Made By Them While Working In India), The Realization That The Symptoms Caused Bydiphtheria Were At A Point Distant Than The Infective Bacilli And Hence Due To A Toxin Elaborated; The Antisera For Tetanus Anddiphtheria; Bcg, The Attenuated Bovine Tuberculosis Bacillus For Vaccination Etc. Metchnikoff Laid The Basis Of Cellular Immunity, Bordet Discovered The Complement System.Part I Of The Book Provides Historical Insights On The Development Of Immunology In The Period Between The Two World Wars, The Pasteurian And The Grand Germanic School Of Koch, Ehrlich, And Von Behring, The Controversies Which Spurred Progress And Led To The Enrichment Of This Discipline. A Chapter In Part Ii Summarizes The Current Status Of The Vaccine, Which Have Historically Been The Most Cost Effective Agents For Control Of Diseases And Have Helped Eradicate Small Pox From The Surface Of The Globe.Part Iii Of The Book Has Two Thought Provoking Articles On The Philosophical Implications Of The Findings On Immune Mechanisms To Other Biological Processes. For Example Learning Is Not An Acquired Process From Outside. Instructive Theories On Antibody Formation Are Disproved. Instead, It Is Selection And Amplification That Prevails. The Book Concludes With An Enlightening Chapter On Perspectives In Modern Immunology. The Immune System Need Not Be Conceived For The Aggressive Function Of Combatingoutside Organisms. The Recognition Of Self Is Fundamental To Its Working.

Book Description
A comprehensive, authoritative look at an emergent area in post-genomic science, Evolutionary genomics is an up-and-coming, complex field that attempts to explain the biocomplexity of the living world. Evolutionary Genomics and Systems Biology is the first full-length book to blend established and emerging concepts in bioinformatics, evolution, genomics, and structural biology, with the integrative views of network and systems biology. Three key aspects of evolutionary genomics and systems biology are covered in clear detail: the study of genomic history, i.e., understanding organismal evolution at the genomic level; the study of macromolecular complements, which encompasses the evolution of the protein and RNA machinery that propels life; and the evolutionary and dynamic study of wiring diagrams—macromolecular components in interaction—in the context of genomic complements. The book also features: A solid, comprehensive treatment of phylogenomics, the evolution of genomes, and the evolution of biological networks, within the framework of systems biology A special section on RNA biology—translation, evolution of structure, and micro RNA and regulation of gene expression Chapters on the mapping of genotypes to phenotypes, the role of information in biology, protein architecture and biological function, chromosomal rearrangements, and biological networks and disease Contributions by leading authorities on each topic Evolutionary Genomics and Systems Biology is an ideal book for students and professionals in genomics, bioinformatics, evolution, structural biology, complexity, origins of life, systematic biology, and organismal diversity, as well as those individuals interested in aspects of biological sciences as they interface with chemistry, physics, and computer science and engineering.

Book Description
Science and philosophy have both undergone radical transformations in recent times. Now they are poised for a pivotal alliance. Science has abandoned the mechanistic model of nature. Philosophy has broken through the tight, traditional circle of conceptualisation, intellectualistic preconceptions and cognitive presuppositions. The two now meet to focus on the palpitating, fluctuating stream of nature/life. Their traditional prejudices dispersed under the pressure of new evidence, philosophy/phenomenology of life and the sciences of life meet in the Archimedean point of the human creative condition (proper to the phenomenology of life) and the role of the human subject (central to the scientific view of reality). They necessitate each other: without the sciences of life, philosophy/phenomenology of life cannot penetrate the intricacies of nature/life; without recourse to philosophy to delineate, design, provide clues to the organisation of natural evidence, the sciences of life cannot devise new strategies for inquiry nor survey their field. The present collection throws open the barriers that separate nature and culture, works of physis and those of the spirit. Following the philosophical model of the ontopoieisis of life, focusing on its specifically human sphere - that of the human self-interpretation-in-existence - it encircles the vast, new horizons of the new alliance.

Book Description
This authored monograph covers a viability to approach to traffic management by advising to vehicles circulated on the network the velocity they should follow for satisfying global traffic conditions;. It presents an investigation of three structural innovations: The objective is to broadcast at each instant and at each position the advised celerity to vehicles, which could be read by auxiliary speedometers or used by cruise control devices. Namely, 1. Construct regulation feedback providing at each time and position advised velocities (celerities) for minimizing congestion or other requirements. 2. Taking into account traffic constraints of different type, the first one being to remain on the roads, to stop at junctions, etc. 3. Use information provided by the probe vehicles equipped with GPS to the traffic regulator; 4. Use other global traffic measures of vehicles provided by different types of sensors; These results are based on convex analysis, intertemporal optimization and viability theory as mathematical tools as well as viability algorithms on the computing side, instead of conventional techniques such as partial differential equations and their resolution by finite difference or finite elements algorithms. The target audience primarily covers researchers and mathematically oriented engineers but the book may also be beneficial for graduate students.
