This research asserts the thesis that by examining the Greek forms of the Apostles' Creed and identifying core creedal language, the influence of that language on the New Testament manuscripts can be ascertained. The hypothesis of this study proposes that the creedal language of the early church creeds and specifically the early forms of the Apostles' Creed had such prevalence in the life of the early church that it influenced the scribes who recorded the New Testament texts from that period forward. The hypothesis does not propose that the theology of the New Testament was primarily shaped by creedal influence upon the text, but rather that the influence of the early church creeds caused variants in the text through scribal changes, with many of those changes being harmonistic corruptions and conflated readings. Finally, this study does not seek to ascertain the original text of the New Testament, but rather it seeks to show the effect of creedal language on New Testament textual transmission.

Explores the rise of the idea of nothing in Western modernity and how its figuration is transforming and offering new possibilities. In this groundbreaking, interdisciplinary history of ideas, Andrew W. Hass explores the ascendency of the concept of nothing into late modernity. He argues that the rise of the reality of nothing in religion, philosophy, and literature has taken place only against the decline of the concept of One: a shift from a sovereign understanding of the One (unity, universality) toward the figure of the Oa cipher figure that, as nonentity, is nevertheless determinant of other realities. The figuring of this O culminates in a proliferation of literary expressions of nothingness, void, and absence from 1940 to 1960, but by centurys end, this movement has shifted from linear progression to mutation, whereby religion, theology, philosophy, literature, and other critical modes of thought, such as feminism, merge into a shared, circular activity. The writer W. H. Auden lends his name to this O, his long poetic work The Sea and the Mirror an exemplary manifestation of its implications. The book provides an original and important narrative on the significance of canon in the Christian tradition. Standard accounts of canon reduce canon to scripture and treat scripture as a criterion of truth. Scripture is then related in positive or negative ways to tradition, reason, and experience. Such projects involve a misreading of the meaning and content of canon —- they locate the canonical heritage of the church within epistemology —- and Abraham charts the fatal consquences of this move, from the Fathers to modern feminist theology. In the process he shows that the central epistemological concerns of the Enlightenment have Christian origins and echoes. He also shows that the crucial developments of theology from the Reformation onwards involve extraordinary efforts to fix the foundations of faith. This trajectory is now exhausted theologically and spiritually. Hence, the door is opened for a recovery of the full canonical heritage of the early church and for fresh work on the epistemology of theology.
