Author: Hans Bernhard Schmid
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319568655

Pages : 277
Book Description
This edited volume offers a new approach to understanding social conventions by way of Martin Heidegger. It connects the philosopher's conceptions of the anyone, everydayness, and authenticity with an analysis and critique of social normativity. Heidegger’s account of the anyone is ambiguous. Some see it as a good description of human sociality, others think of it as an important critique of modern mass society. This volume seeks to understand this ambiguity as reflecting the tension between the constitutive function of conventions for human action and the critical aspects of conformism. It argues that Heidegger’s anyone should neither be reduced to its pejorative nor its constitutive dimension. Rather, the concept could show how power and norms function. This volume would be of interest to scholars and students of philosophy and the social sciences who wish to investigate the social applications of the works of Martin Heidegger.

In Search of Authenticity
Author: Jacob Golomb
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 240
Book Description
Personal authenticity is out of fashion amongst analytic philosophers. Yet, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Sartre and Camus were clearly preoccupied by its theoretical and practical viability. In this study, Jacob Golomb illuminates the writings of these philosophers in an attempt to explain their particular ethical stance on the subject. This book will prove invaluable reading for students and teachers of philosophy, literature and education and indeed for anyone who has ever empathized with Camus's Meursault, Sartre's Matthieu or Nietzsche's Zarathustra.

On Authenticity

Book Description
Heidegger and Sartre had much in common as philosophers, mostly because Sartre read extensively on Heidegger’s work and built on many of Heidegger’s ideas. Some of those ideas were Heidegger’s authenticity and the ontological status of being-with the Other. Heidegger said that we achieve authenticity, meaning that there are times when we realize our potentiality-for-being through being-towards-death (Heidegger, 305). This authenticity is contrasted with inauthenticity, which is more frequent and usually occurs when Dasein falls into her They-self (Heidegger, 220-221). Heidegger left the possibility for authenticity in the face of the Other open due to the ontological nature of the Other. Heidegger stated that the Other is foundationally a part of Dasein’s being-in-the-world; in essence there is no being-in-the-world without Dasein’s being-with Others (Heidegger, 154-155). Sartre expanded on this with his Look. For Sartre, the Look gives a detailed description of how Dasein be in the world with Others, and it paves the way for another idea while simultaneously roadblocking it: Dasein’s becoming-authentic in the face of the Other. While Sartre mainly focuses on the negative aspects of the gaze of the Other as seen by his emphasis on the power dynamic, I argue that a power dynamic does not necessarily present itself when Dasein is looked upon by the Other. This, in turn, allows for authenticity not only in our being-towards-death, as Heidegger explained, but in our being-with Others.

The Authenticity Hoax
Author: Andrew Potter
Publisher: Scribe Publications
ISBN: 1921640499
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 305
Book Description
We live in a world increasingly dominated by the fake, the prepackaged, the artificial: fast food, scripted reality TV shows, Facebook 'friends', and fraudulent memoirs. But people everywhere are demanding the exact opposite, heralding 'authenticity' as the cure for isolated individualism and shallow consumerism. Restaurants promote the authenticity of their cuisine, while condo developers promote authentic loft living and book reviewers regularly praise the authenticity of a new writer's voice. International bestselling author, Andrew Potter, brilliantly unpacks our modern obsession with authenticity. In this perceptive and thought-provoking blend of pop culture, history, and philosophy, he finds that far from serving as a refuge from modern living, the search for authenticity often creates the very problems it's meant to solve.

Searching for Authenticity
Author: S. Gayle Baugh
Publisher: IAP
ISBN: 1623969840
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 179
Book Description
Volume 2 of the Research in Careers series focuses on the search for authenticity in one’s career. Although there has been growing interest in the topic within the popular press, relatively little academic research has been completed on authenticity and careers. Researchers are still refining the concept of authenticity and are just beginning to investigate how it influences the enactment of careers in today’s turbulent career landscape. This volume offers the first organized effort on the topic. This volume contains seven chapters which examine the search for authenticity derived from the Kaleidoscope Career Model (Mainiero & Sullivan, 2006). Chapters 1 and 2 present a review of the literature and an in-depth analysis of the construct of authenticity. Chapter 1 offers a new lens to view career authenticity based on two dimensions of self-awareness and adaptability. Chapter 2 uses two case studies to define how individuals are authentic in their career. Chapters 3 and 4 examine the authenticity of individuals in different career stages, with Chapter 3 examining recent college graduates and Chapter 4 examining mid to late stage careerists. Chapters 5, 6 and 7 focus on the interplay between social interactions and career authenticity. Chapter 5 offers a process model that traces how, through negotiation, a person’s identities shape and are shaped by relationships with others, leading to the enactment of an authentic career. Chapter 6 explores how individuals remain authentic in their career while negotiating the conflicting expectations of multiple interest groups. Chapter 7 examines the complex relationships among career authenticity, political behaviors, and strain.
