This book traces the history and theology of Evangelicals in the Church of England, both liberal and conservative, from the First World War to the appearance of the Alternative Service Book in 1980. Evangelical Anglicans stand for what they see as historic Anglicanism with its emphasis on the intrinsic veracity of scripture as the sole authority for faith and life. While it highlights the progress of the gospel through evangelism and literary output, the work does not gloss over the small-mindedness and 'sectarianism' that has sometimes characterised Evangelicals. Earlier in the twentieth century, Evangelical Anglicans saw themselves as making a 'last ditch' stand for Protestant integrity but, in mid-century, with the backing of scholarship, they came out of their 'fox holes' and eventually emerged with a redemptionist theology to embrace both church and society. This movement reached a peak with the national evangelical congresses in 1967 and 1977.

This book is the first systematic attempt to describe a coherent and comprehensive Anglican understanding of Church. Rather than focusing on one school of thought, Dr Locke unites under one ecclesiological umbrella the seemingly disparate views that have shaped Anglican reflections on Church. He does so by exploring three central historical developments: (1) the influence of Protestantism; (2) the Anglican defence of episcopacy; and (3) the development of the Anglican practice of authority. Dr Locke demonstrates how the interaction of these three historical influences laid the foundations of an Anglican understanding of Church that continues to guide and shape Anglican identity. He shows how this understanding of Church has shaped recent Anglican ecumenical dialogues with Reformed, Lutheran, Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches. Since their commercial introduction in 1996, genetically modified (GM) crops have been adopted by farmers around the world at impressive rates. In 2011, 180 million hectares of GM crops were cultivated by more than 15 million farmers in 29 countries. In the next decade, global adoption is expected to grow even faster as the research pipeline for new biotech traits and crops has increased almost fourfold in the last few years. The adoption of GM crops has led to increased productivity, while reducing pesticide use and the emissions of agricultural greenhouse gases, leading to broadly distributed economic benefits across the global food supply chain. Despite the rapid uptake of GM crops, the various social and economic benefits as well as the expanding rate innovation, the use of GM crops remains controversial in parts of the world. English evangelicals give the appearance of being a community at war, with each other and with the world around them. The issue of homosexuality is one of the key battlegrounds. How has this issue become so significant to evangelicals? Why is it provoking such violent responses? How is it changing evangelicals, and what might this mean for the future?
