Book Description
Freddie Steinmark started at safety for the undefeated University of Texas Longhorns in 1969. In the thrilling “Game of the Century,” a come-from-behind victory against Arkansas that ensured Texas the national championship, Steinmark played with pain in his left leg. Two days later, X-rays revealed a bone tumor so large that it seemed a miracle Steinmark could walk, let alone play football. Within a week of the Arkansas game, his leg was amputated. A gritty, undersized player, Steinmark had quickly become a fan favorite at Texas. What he endured during the Longhorns’ memorable 1969 season, and what he encountered afterward, captivated not only Texans but the country at large. Americans watched closely as Steinmark confronted life’s ultimate challenge, and his openness during his battle against savage odds helped reframe the national conversation surrounding cancer and the ongoing race for a cure. Written with unfettered access to the Steinmark family and archives, Freddie Steinmark: Faith, Family, Football is the exploration of a brief but full life, one that began humbly but ended on a grand stage. It is a fitting tribute to a legendary Longhorn whose photograph, emblazoned with the word “Heart,” flashes on the Freddie Steinmark Scoreboard’s Jumbotron prior to each home football game in UT’s Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium at Joe Jamail Field.

Book Description
Freddy was a football who lived on a shelf in a sports store, but wanted to belong to someone who would love him. He had seen many of the other footballs, torn, patched and almost flat, brought back by boys looking for replacements. He was so happy when they came to buy baseballs and basketballs, instead of another football. One day Freddy was sold with other footballs to some men who took him to a football stadium, where he was placed on a tee and became part of the game. After much pain and rough handling by the monsters in uniform, he sailed through the air for a touchdown. The monster who caught him then slammed him to the ground so hard he thought his laces had broken. When placed in position for the field goal he was terrified of hitting the cross bar, but sailed through the uprights and into the arms of a little boy named Andy. Freddy finally found happiness in the arms of someone who loved him. He was now part of a family. Freddy the Football is one of several stories that Jim had composed, while his four children were young. Jim always claimed that by reading his stories to them, it seemed to have a calming effect on the 'Fearsome Foursome' before bedtime. Long forgotten in a file cabinet, he has recently resurrected them to read to his Grandchildren, hoping to have the same effect. Since the family has always enjoyed the stories, he decided to publish them as a means of preserving them for future generations of the family. Jim intends to publish his other books which include The Tale of a Toe, Rufus Tweed the Father of Greed and The Krankel Family, a book for each of his beloved foursome.

Book Description
What we remember most about our youth are the friends we grew up with. What we treasure most are the friends we still have from that special time and place. And when we are challenged with the conventional wisdom that friendship is too commonplace, too mundane to make a good story, we respond, "Oh, but you don't know my friends!" Freddy and Mike is the story of two friends growing up in the 1950s. An unlikely pair at first meeting, they become inseparable, surviving trials of fire by tapping unknown reservoirs of strength, and enjoying a secret which few discover. Freddy and Mike begins when the two ten-year-old boys meet in the small Midwestern town they call home. They come from different backgrounds. One belongs to the traditional family of that era where dad works and mom stays home to run the household. The other lives with his mother, his father's whereabouts unknown. Mother and son suffer the double stigma of being poor and of having a working mother as the single provider. As the story progresses, each boy, in turn, learns that he can achieve what he thought was impossible if he depends on the other and accepts help that is offered without conditions. Laughter, pain and sorrow all play integral parts in forming and sustaining Freddy and Mike. And when the last page is read, the reaction will be a genuine smile. In today's world of sound-bite news, intimate conversations via cell phone, and 24/7 lives everywhere; friendships and relationships are hard to come by and even harder to maintain. Come live in Freddy and Mike's world for awhile. Then go see those who were so special to you, and can be again.

Book Description
A charming and accessible collection of poems dedicated to one of the most American of inventions--fast food. El Dorado Freddy's may be the first book of fast-food poetry. In poems like "Olive Garden," "Culver's," "Popeye's Louisiana Kitchen," "Cracker Barrel," "Applebee's (after James Wright)," Caine--owner of the Raven Book Store in Lawrence, Kansas--"reviews" chain restaurants, bringing our attention to a slice of American life we often overlook, even though it's everywhere. Along the way, he touches on such topics as parenting, the Midwest, politics, and the pitfalls of nostalgia. Caine's wry, deceptively accomplished poems are paired with Tara Wray's color-drenched photos. The result is a literary yet goofy homage to American food and identity, set in a midwestern landscape dotted by the light of fast-food restaurants' glowing signs. Perfect for those readers who love both poetry and Popeye's.
