Book Description
Statesman and soldiers: What is the relationship that exists between the policymaker and the strategist? And, when the policymaker is actively involved in determining the strategies, what is the effect of advice given by the senior military leader and what role should he play in formulating policy and strategy? Given that military officers will continue to provide advice and service to civilian leaders, how do these relationships between the statesman and strategist influence or shape the outcome of policymaking, and can successes or failures be attributed to these personal relationships? This study seeks to examine those questions by reviewing the relationship of the somewhat controversial General Hap Arnold and the President of the United States, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The study will initially focus on the strategist, General Arnold, as he developed personally, and some of the background history and politics in the development of the Army Air Forces. Approaching the World War II era, the focus will shift to the building of the world’s greatest air force and the winning of World War II. It will examine the personalities, politics, and policies of the President of the United States in their relationship to General Arnold and other service chiefs. The paper will conclude with thoughts on the relationships between policymakers and strategists to determine if those relationships are still important today and if so, how the strategist can best prepare for this relationship.

Book Description
N THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, THE IMPACT OF FLIGHT REACHED INTO EVERY CORNER OF American society. However, nowhere has its impact been more dramatic than in the realm of military affairs. Over the past one hundred years, the evolution of military aviation technology has altered the way Americans have looked at national security. The development of military aviation has had an enormous impact upon the battlefield which, in turn, has transformed international politics and the crafting of national security policy. The question of how best to protect the United States against external military threats has come to involve the projection of military power abroad. With the passage of time and accelerated advancement of military aviation technology, the organization and development of air forces have assumed greater urgency and significance. In 1934, James H. Jimmy Doolittle noted that the future security of our nation is dependent upon an adequate air force AND this will become increasingly important as the science of aviation advances. I.

Book Description
In 1950, when he commissioned the first edition of The Armed Forces Officer, Secretary of Defense George C. Marshall told its author, S.L.A. Marshall, that "American military officers, of whatever service, should share common ground ethically and morally." In this new edition, the authors methodically explore that common ground, reflecting on the basics of the Profession of Arms, and the officer's special place and distinctive obligations within that profession and especially to the Constitution.

Book Description
The United States Air Force is the most technologically advanced service in the world. Stealth, precision, global range, and space systems are only a few of the hallmarks of the USAF technology. Airborne laser weapons, super-accurate sensors, and hypersonic aircraft are already in the early stages of development. Creations such as these are not the product of stagnant minds or idle hands. It was in 1944 that General of the Army Herny H. "Hap" Arnold established the Army Air Forces (AAF) Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) under the direction of Dr. Theodore von Karman. The SAG meticulously created the first science and technology forecast ever accomplished in military history. The study predicted many of the developments in aviation technology which, today, most Americans take for granted. Some of the more outstanding of these are suipersonic flight, precision weaponry, accurate radr, and the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM).In Architects of American Air Supremacy, Dik Daso tells the story of the founding of the scientific and technical base of today's USAF. But this work is much more than simply a history of technology. The SAG was a culminating point reached only after many years of building interpersonal relationships, developing industrial bonds, and tapping the wisdom of America's most influential scientists. In large measure this book reflects the symbiotic nature of the military and the society which it serves. This book is an introduction to the very nature of the USAF - a service founded in aviation science and technology and built by great commanders, innovators, and dedicated men and women in the serivce of their nation.Ronald R.
