Book Description
ENGLISH France Images & Messages, a new collection of color photographs, is an expansion both in size and scope of Metro Portraits and Metro Messages, published in 2012. Instead of the horizontal layout, the square size of this book facilitates the inclusion of vertical and panoramic photographs. The pictures were taken in France between 1998 and 2015 with both film and digital cameras. The collection is composed of seven groups of illustrations as well as a polyptych and an envoi. In addition to portraits, graffiti and found art from deconstructed posters as documented in the previous albums, there are sections illustrating street signs, doors and windows and tributes to French street artists. The photographs in the collection portray a France that is ambiguous, absurd and ephemeral—and often wistful and humorous. English translations and annotations included in an appendix.

Book Description
Text and image are used together in an increasingly flexible fashion and many disciplines and areas of study are now attempting to understand how these combinations work. This introductory textbook explores and analyses the various approaches to multimodality and offers a broad, interdisciplinary survey of all aspects of the text-image relation. It leads students into detailed discussion concerning a number of approaches that are used. It also brings out their strengths and weaknesses using illustrative example analyses and raises explicit research questions to reinforce learning. Throughout the book, John Bateman looks at a wide range of perspectives: socio-semiotics, visual communication, psycholinguistic approaches to discourse, rhetorical approaches to advertising and visual persuasion, and cognitive metaphor theory. Applications of the styles of analyses presented are discussed for a variety of materials, including advertisements, picture books, comics and textbooks. Requiring no prior knowledge of the area, this is an accessible text for all students studying text and image or multimodality within English Language and Linguistics, Media and Communication Studies, Visual and Design Studies.

Book Description
Ross provides a broad survey of pictures and texts concerning saints, from the Early Christian through the late Gothic period. Both Western and Byzantine material is included. Beginning with the earliest pictures of and stories about saints, the book traces the evolution of hagiographic imagery primarily in manuscript contexts. Because of its cross-disciplinary nature, it will be of interest to audiences interested in Early Christian, Byzantine, and Western medieval culture: religion, society, politics, and art. No other book to date is organized similarly in providing detailed descriptions for the identification of medieval manuscripts with hagiographic texts and illustrations.

Book Description
The French Connections of Jacques Derrida offers stimulating and accessible essays that address, for the first time, the issue of Derrida's relation to French poetics, writing, thought, and culture. In addition to offering considerations of Derrida through studies of such significant French authors as Mallarmé, Baudelaire, Valéry, Laporte, Ponge, Perec, Blanchot, and Barthes, the book also reassesses the development of Derrida's work in the context of structuralism, biology, and linguistics in the 1960s, and looks at the possible relationships between Derrida's writing and that of the Surrealist and Oulipa groups. Derrida is introduced as one whose work is as much poetic as it is philosophical, and who is strikingly French and yet not unproblematically so. [Contributors include Boris Belay, John Brannigan, Christopher Johnson, John P. Leavey, Jr., Ian Maclachlan, Jessica Maynard, Laurent Milesi, Ruth Robbins, Michael Syrotinski, Michael Temple, Burhan Tufail, and Julian Wolfreys.]
