A edição inclui ainda um estudo introdutório do tradutor Guilherme Gontijo Flores e uma série de aparatos críticos que fazem desta a edição mais completa e rigorosa de Safo já publicada no Brasil. Nascida na ilha grega de Lesbos, Safo viveu entre os séculos VII e VI a.C., e a qualidade de sua poesia, elaborada para o canto ao som da lira, fez com que o culto a seu nome permanecesse vivo até os dias de hoje. Como pouco se sabe sobre a vida da poeta, cada época projetou em sua figura suas próprias aspirações, de musa da poesia romântica a ícone do amor livre e da afirmação feminina. No período helenístico, quase trezentos anos após sua morte, sua obra foi recolhida e organizada em nove livros, cada um segundo uma métrica específica, pelos sábios da Biblioteca de Alexandria, e Safo foi incluída na plêiade dos maiores poetas líricos gregos. Entretanto, todos os livros se perderam, e a obra de Safo só sobreviveu por meio de pedaços de papiros e citações em tratados antigos, além de outros registros esparsos, tendo restado um único poema na íntegra, o chamado “Hino a Afrodite”. O presente volume, bilíngue, organizado, traduzido, apresentado e anotado por Guilherme Gontijo Flores, poeta, tradutor premiado e professor de Letras Clássicas da UFPR, reúne toda a produção de Safo que se conhece até hoje, incluindo um poema encontrado em 2004 e dois poemas recém-descobertos em 2014. Para isso, o tradutor realizou um trabalho inédito, compilando as contribuições dos maiores especialistas na autora grega, de modo a produzir o conjunto mais completo possível dos fragmentos sáficos — tudo isso aliado à recriação poética em alto nível de cada pequeno trecho que chegou até nós. This book deals with Greek lyric composed more than twenty-five centuries ago.
