Focusing on the period 1990–2015, Nelly Richard denounces the politics and aesthetics of forgetting that have underpinned both the protracted transition out of dictatorship and the denial of justice to its survivors and victims. What are the perils and social costs of a culture of forgetting? What forms do memories of injustice take in newly formed democracies? How might a history of violence and an ethics of reparation be reconciled in post-autocratic societies? In addressing these and other questions, Richard exposes the abuses of the past and the present while also attending to the residues of memory that are manifested in street protests, literature, and the media, and in artistic practices from architecture and urban design to installation and film. The 1973 coups d’état in Uruguay and Chile were significantly different from other military coups in Latin America. These two dictatorial regimes began a new era in the subcontinent. They became staunch bearers of a National Security State doctrine and introduced radical new economic policies. Una arqueología de la imagen, implica considerar a la imagen desde la intermedialidad (entre-medios), los cuerpos y las miradas. Concebirla desde una crítica de la cultura en una contemporaneidad atravesada por la crisis. La pregunta ¿qué son las imágenes? que se formula desde la debilidad de cierta inocencia de la escritura, adquiere toda su dimensión desde el momento en que se confunde imagen con visualidad o imagen con medios audiovisuales, dejando por el camino todos los restos de imágenes que no son visuales. Aún más, ese debate se torna más complejo, cuando en su trasfondo está la «memoria» del holocausto (o de los holocaustos); las imágenes de la crisis política, económica y social o los miles de refugiados, en la paradigmática imagen de un niño muerto en la playa, deambulando por geografías europeas. La imagen es, en efecto, «nómada», viaja por territorios y culturas. In The Art of Post-Dictatorship: Ethics and Aesthetics in Transitional Argentina Vikki Bell examines this involvement and intervention.
