But with Yarni, his gorgeous wife (and a brilliant lawyer), now calling the shots, Des isn’t going back to the slammer without a fierce fight. Even with the heat on, Des manages to take his game to the next level and finds a new hustle, one that will allow him to possess the three things all major players desire: money, power, and respect. He becomes a preacher. Reluctantly, Yarni stands by her man as he trades in his triple beam scale for a Bible and a Bentley and makes his Church of the Good Life Ministry a welcoming place for all sinners to step up to the altar. But when Des’s nephew is killed in the high-stakes heroin trade and Des learns that someone close to him okayed the hit, the dyed-in-the-wool gangsta sets aside the Bible for the gospel of the streets–even if it means risking the one person who’s always had his back.

Book Description
The excessive worship of adolescence and its social empowerment by adult institutions is the deeply rooted cause of a serious cultural malaise. So argues semiotician Marcel Danesi in Forever Young, an unforgiving and controversial look at modern culture's incessant drive to create a 'teen-aging' of adult life. Written for the general reader and based on five year's worth of interviews with over 200 adolescents and their parents, Danesi begins by asserting that one of the early causes of this crystallization of adolescence as an age category can be traced back to theories of psychology at the turn of the twentieth century. Since then, the psychological view of adolescence as a stressful period of adjustment has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. This, in tandem with the devaluation of the family by the media and society at large, has led to a maturity gap - a fissure in family dynamics that is eagerly and ably exploited by the mass media. Unlike many academic digressions into the malaise of modern culture, Forever Young provides concrete answers on how the 'forever young syndrome' can be addressed. One solution is to dispel the myth that experts and professionals are the people best equipped to give advice on raising children. The second is to recognize the value of family, in all its different combinations, as the primary institution of child-rearing. The third is to challenge the pervasive notion that teen culture is a sophisticated endeavour - that, for example, pop music can claim to have produced some of the best musical art in the world, surpassing Mozart or Bach. By laying bare the misguided tenets that have brought about, and continue to promote, a 'forever young' mentality, Marcel Danesi demonstrates that the 'teen-aging' of culture has come about because it is, simply put, good for business. Teen tastes have achieved cultural supremacy because the western economic system requires a conformist and easily manipulated market, and has thus joined forces with the media-entertainment oligarchy to promote a deterministic 'forever young' market.

Book Description
"The True Tales of Shorty Stevens" tells the adventures of three best friends during the great depression . The story is situated in the Ico Community of southwest Arkansas. Some 25 miles south of Little Rock, just outside of Sheridan, the town is full of hard working railroad and timber industry families. Shorty Stevens, nine years old and full of life is the leader of the group. Blessed with the gift of gab, he tells stories almost too big to be true. His best pal since the time they could walk is Easter Rhodes, also nine. He loves to read, and someday wants to be a writer. He's usually stuck smack dab in the middle of one of Shorty's schemes, but he doesn't seem to mind too much! The last in the group is Scooter McElroy. He's eight and sometimes a little shy. He and his folks moved down to Ico from Little Rock a few years before, so he hasn't known the others as long as they've known each other, but they're all as close as peas and carrots just the same. The year is 1933. No television. No video games. No magic Wizards, with magical powers. These boys have to find their own adventures in and around town. It doesn't take long before an adventure jumps up and finds them! Shorty's Pa, Johnny was over at the Ico Grocery when it all started. He told the folks there about a ghost story he'd heard when he was a boy. The others just looked in amazement as Johnny Stevens went on and on about a "Ghost Gal" that was killed on bad roads going to her honeymoon. Why, she'd be seen for years and years, just standing by the side of the road with a suitcase in her hand waiting for a ride to meet her Mister. Of course, once they got there, she'd disappear from the car leaving the driver surprised and confused. Shorty overhears his Daddy telling this story with great enthusiasm, and it definitely piques his interest in Ghost Hunting! He tells the others about what he's heard that fateful day. After lots of convincing, they decide to go on a ghost hunt some 12 miles away through the backroads and over the highway to find the mysterious curve, and a Ghost Gal! The boys not only go looking for a ghost story, they find out about themselves as well. They have a lot of other adventures along that road. They have some laughs as they tell stories, and have fun doing something exciting and different with their best friends. They also learn some things about themselves that they never knew before. Like how strong they were when they needed to be. Or how close the three really were. Life was different in 1933 Arkansas, but the adventurous spirit of boys was not. These boys want to see everything, and do things the grown-ups either can't or wont. Read all about their adventures in "The True Tales of Shorty Stevens" due out in bookstores in the Spring of 2006, by Authorhouse books.

Book Description
A compendium of poetry, stories and philosophy written between 1050 B.C. and 27909 A.D. which has a semi-autobiographical feel. A feeling of paranoia surges through the veins of this literary effort. From juxtaposed perspectives we interpret life on our sexy planet and others, judging it if only because it is in our nature to judge, appraise and therefore obtain opinion if not knowledge itself. In addition to which there is a rude joke about a pig, sci-fi from 1,000 millennia ago, morphine-laden ruminations on the nature of animals, a comedy sketch where the entire gag is based upon a simple yet versatile pun, and a tender, hearty section on adolescent lust. And then some.

Book Description
An engaging account of the uniquely creative spirit and bustling cultural ecology of contemporary Los Angeles How did Los Angeles start the 20th century as a dusty frontier town and end up a century later as one of the globe's supercities - with unparalleled cultural, economic, and technological reach? In City at the Edge of Forever, Peter Lunenfeld constructs an urban portrait, layer by layer, from serendipitous affinities, historical anomalies, and uncanny correspondences. In its pages, modernist architecture and lifestyle capitalism come together via a surfer girl named Gidget; Joan Didion's yellow Corvette is the brainchild of a car-crazy Japanese-American kid interned at Manzanar; and the music of the Manson Family segues into the birth of sci-fi fandom. One of the book's innovations is to brand Los Angeles as the alchemical city. Earth became real estate when the Yankees took control in the nineteenth century. Fire fueled the city's early explosive growth as the Southland's oil fields supplied the inexhaustible demands of drivers and their cars. Air defined the area from WWII to the end of the Cold War, with aeronautics and aerospace dominating the region's industries. Water is now the key element, and Southern California's ports are the largest in the western hemisphere. What alchemists identify as the ethereal fifth element, or quintessence, this book positions as the glamour of Hollywood, a spell that sustains the city but also needs to be broken in order to understand Los Angeles now. Lunenfeld weaves together the city's art, architecture, and design, juxtaposes its entertainment and literary histories, and moves from restaurant kitchens to recording studios to ultra-secret research and development labs. In the process, he reimagines Los Angeles as simultaneously an exemplar and cautionary tale for the 21st century.
