Malgré les importants changements consécutifs à la désinstutionnalisation en ce qui a trait à l'intégration sociale des personnes ayant une déficience intellectuelle (DI), ces personnes voient encore fréquemment leurs droits et leur autonomie remis en question, ce qui freine leur possibilité de participer à la société sur la base de l'égalité avec tous. S'adressant à ces défis, le projet d'intervention réalisé visait à mettre en lumière les perspectives d'intervention les plus susceptibles de soutenir ces personnes afin qu'elles puissent mener une vie participative et autodéterminée. Il proposait un groupe d'éducation citoyenne à des adultes ayant une DI, leur permettant de s'engager dans une démarche d'appropriation du pouvoir d'agir et d'action sociale. S'appuyant sur le modèle du processus de production du handicap (PPH), le projet intervenait à la fois sur les facteurs personnels et environnementaux, des éléments reconnus comme incontournables pour favoriser la participation sociale. Ce faisant, le projet se démarquait de la plupart des programmes d'intervention créés jusqu'à ce jour, qui ont tendance à mettre l'accent sur les expériences individuelles des personnes, en omettant l'influence des conditions structurelles. L'essai confirme pourtant la pertinence de miser sur l'interaction entre les facteurs personnels et environnementaux. À cet effet, il propose des balises d'intervention ancrées dans la simultanéité de ces facteurs, tel que de miser sur un processus d'apprentissage actif ainsi que de veiller à accompagner les personnes ayant une DI en prenant soin de garder un équilibre continuel entre soutien et liberté. Ces balises visent à mieux outiller les intervenants afin qu'ils deviennent de véritables facilitateurs de la participation sociale. Ainsi, ils pourront redistribuer le pouvoir qui leur est traditionnellement accordé pour assurer une plus grande autonomie décisionnelle aux personnes ayant une DI, en plus de faire alliance avec ce groupe dans la lutte pour leur reconnaissance à titre de citoyens à part entière.
