Book Description
In a democracy, we generally assume that voters know the policies they prefer and elect like-minded officials who are responsible for carrying them out. We also assume that voters consider candidates' competence, honesty, and other performance-related traits. But does this actually happen? Do voters consider candidates’ policy positions when deciding for whom to vote? And how do politicians’ performances in office factor into the voting decision? In Follow the Leader?, Gabriel S. Lenz sheds light on these central questions of democratic thought. Lenz looks at citizens’ views of candidates both before and after periods of political upheaval, including campaigns, wars, natural disasters, and episodes of economic boom and bust. Noting important shifts in voters’ knowledge and preferences as a result of these events, he finds that, while citizens do assess politicians based on their performance, their policy positions actually matter much less. Even when a policy issue becomes highly prominent, voters rarely shift their votes to the politician whose position best agrees with their own. In fact, Lenz shows, the reverse often takes place: citizens first pick a politician and then adopt that politician’s policy views. In other words, they follow the leader. Based on data drawn from multiple countries, Follow the Leader? is the most definitive treatment to date of when and why policy and performance matter at the voting booth, and it will break new ground in the debates about democracy.

Follow the Leader
Author: Laura Tingle
Publisher: Quarterly Essay
ISBN: 1743820593
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 176
Book Description
What is true political leadership, and how do we get it? What qualities should we wish for in our leaders? And why is it killing season for prime ministers? In this wise and timely essay, Laura Tingle argues that democratic leaders build a consensus for change, rather than bludgeon the system or turn politics into a popularity contest. They mobilise and guide, more than impose a vision. Tingle offers acute portraits – profiles in courage and cunning – of leaders ranging from Merkel and Howard to Macron and Obama. She discusses the rise of the strongman, including Donald Trump, for whom there is no map, only sentiment and power. And she analyses what has gone wrong with politics in Australia, arguing that successful leaders know what they want to do, and create the space and time to do it. After the Liberal Party's recent episode of political madness, where does this leave the nation's new prime minister, Scott Morrison? "The Liberal Party has been ripped apart and our polity is the worse off for having one of its major political parties rendered largely ungovernable … Malcolm Turnbull's fate came down to a series of judgements made not just by him, but by his colleagues, who spent much of his prime ministership failing to follow the leader and also failing in their own collective responsibility for leadership." Laura Tingle, Follow the Leader This issue contains correspondence relating to Dead Right by Richard Denniss from John McTernan, W. Max Corden, John Quiggin, Kristina Keneally, Adam Creighton, Danielle Wood, Damien Freeman, Michael Keating, Roderick Best, Richard Denniss

Follow The Leader
Author: Paul Brace
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 264
Book Description
Carter, for example, emerges as "the median president": average in activity, success in Congress, and public support. Follow the Leader shows that presidents often do make Faustian bargains on behalf of their popularity, but they get surprisingly little in return. For example, while it is true that the use of force by the United States abroad has followed bad economic times at home much more frequently than would be expected by chance, the use of force itself does not boost a president's popularity. In fact, foreign policy activities show a variety of different effects. There is an uneasy balance at best between being liked and being president. Conventional wisdom suggests that popular presidents are strong leaders. But Brace and Hinckley demonstrate that things are not so simple. Indeed, presidents who structured their agendas solely on the basis of public approval would often be making choices the American people would not support.

Don't Follow Me
Author: Dave Dungan
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
ISBN: 9781461153757
Category : Leadership
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
A leader is more than someone who is in charge. A true leader is someone who understands how important it is to empower others. One of the greatest privileges you can have is the opportunity to be the leader of leaders. There are plenty of bosses but very few true leaders. What of success? I have come up with three truths about success. The first is that it is never a constant, second it is relative and third it is circumstantial. As to its lack of consistency, success may be held one moment and taken away the next. Success is relative to a focus. You may be great at business but fail as a husband/wife, father/mother or friend. And not everyone holds success to the same standard. In any set of circumstances you may be a huge winner in their eyes or you may be a loser. In this book you will find truths about leadership that make it more than a rung on a ladder and much more than a position. Not everyone was designed to be a leader and that is not a bad thing. But if you feel that you are a true leader then you will want to equip yourself with every tool available so that you may be where you are supposed to be when destiny shows up. The choice is yours, lead on.
