Neuropeptides is one of the disciplines in the field of Neuroscience that has been largely developed from the seventies and one that is foreseen to develop to possibly unimaginable heights in the near future, since neuropeptides are widespread distributed in the central and peripheral nervous systems and they are involved in many pathologies (Parkinson s disease, Alzheimer s disease, schizophrenia, depression&). Growing numbers of researches (cell biologists, biochemists, geneticists, histologists, pharmacologists, physiologists, psychiatrists, pathologists, immunologists, neurobiologists, psychologists&) are currently involved in this discipline and increasingly sophisticated methods for its study are becoming available. Our main aims in writing this book on neuropeptides were the following: a) to review the general data that exist on neuropeptides; b) to show the results found in several research works on the distribution and functions of neuropeptides; and c) to show the future perspectives on neuropeptide research. In this sense, the text has been divided in four parts. The first entitled Introduction to Neuropeptides includes the general data on neuropeptides such as: concepts of neuropeptide, neurotransmitter, neuromodulator and neurohormone, families of neuropeptides, phylogeny and ontogeny of neuropeptides, biosynthesis of neuropeptides, release and receptors of neuropeptides, enzymatic degradation of neuropeptides, methodologies used in the study of neuropeptides and distribution of neuropeptides (Chapter 1). The second part called Distribution of Neuropeptides includes the results obtained by different research groups on the distribution of neuropeptides in the cat spinal cord, brainstem, diencephalon and cerebral cortex, as well as on the distribution of neuropeptides in the dog brainstem and diencephalon and in the alpaca brainstem (Chapters 2-7). The third part deals with the Functions of the Neuropeptides and includes a review chapter on such functions (involvement of neuropeptides in pain, analgesia, thermoregulation, glucoregulation, food and water intake, immunoregulation, wakefulness and sleep, learning and memory) (Chapter 8) and a specific chapter on the implication of neuropeptides in cardiovascular control (Chapter 9). The aim of the fourth part was to show the Pathophysiology of the Neuropeptides . Thus, there is a chapter in which the involvement of neuropeptides in several pathologies such as asthma, arthritis, Alzheimer s disease, Parkinson s disease, alcoholism, schizophrenia, depression, stress and suicide is reviewed. In such chapter, the implication of neuropeptides in aging will be also reviewed (Chapter 10). Moreover, in the fourth part three specific chapters will be focused on the involvement of neuropeptides in migraine and Parkinson s and Alzheimer s disease (Chapters 11, 12), as well as on the implications of neuropeptides and NK-1 receptor antagonists in cancer research (Chapter 13). This book is directed not only to researchers interested in the field of neuropeptides, but to Life and Health Sciences Ph.D. students. For this reason, we have included three review chapters on the general concerning of neuropeptides (Chapter 1), the functional implications of neuropeptides (Chapter 8) and on the pathophysiology of the neuropeptides (Chapter 10). We hope that this text help to students to be enthusiasm in the study of neuropeptides and to introduce them in this field, since much remains to be studied on the distribution and functions of neuropeptides. Finally, we thank to Mercedes de León the help received before and during the redaction of this book.

The need to continually discover new agents for the control or treatment of invertebrate pests and pathogens is undeniable. Agriculture, both animal and plant, succeeds only to the extent that arthropod and helminth consumers, vectors and pathogens can be kept at bay. Humans and their companion animals are also plagued by invertebrate parasites. The deployment of chemical agents for these purposes inevitably elicits the selection of resistant populations of the targets of control, necessitating a regular introduction of new kinds of molecules. Experience in other areas of chemotherapy has shown that a thorough understanding of the biology of disease is an essential platform upon which to build a discovery program. The first report that rapid eye movements occur in sleep in humans was published in 1953. The research journey from this point to the realization that sleep consists of two entirely independent states of being (eventually labeled REM sleep and non-REM sleep) was convoluted, but by 1960 the fundamental duality of sleep was well established including the description of REM sleep in cats associated with “wide awake” EEG patterns and EMG suppression. The first report linking REM sleep to a pathology occurred in 1961 and a clear association of sleep onset REM periods, cataplexy, hypnagogic hallucinations and sleep paralysis was fully established by 1966. When a naïve individual happens to observe a full-blown cataplexy attack, it is both dramatic and unnerving. Usually the observer assumes that the loss of muscle tone represents syncope or seizure. In order to educate health professionals and the general public, Christian Guilleminault and I made movies of full-blown cataplectic episodes (not an easy task). We showed these movies of cataplexy attacks to a number of professional audiences, and were eventually rewarded with the report of a similar abrupt loss of muscle tone in a dog. We were able to bring the dog to Stanford University and with this as the trigger, we were able to develop the Stanford Canine Narcolepsy Colony. Breeding studies revealed the genetic determinants of canine narcolepsy, an autosomal recessive gene we termed canarc1. Emmanuel Mignot took over the colony in 1986 and began sequencing DNA, finally isolating canarc1 in 1999.
