Book Description
Proceedings of a symposium, Vienna, 5-8 June 1990. Over the past decades, many nuclear techniques have been developed and used on an industrial scale for the exploration and exploitation of energy and mineral resources, resulting in very great technical and economic benefits. The major nuclear techniques which are currently employed on a large scale include nucleonics control and on-stream analysis, nuclear well logging and tracer investigations. The advantages of nuclear techniques include rapidity, relative simplicity and, in some cases, the possibility of use in hostile environments where no other methods can be used. Furthermore, nuclear measurements and nucleonics control can be made by non-contact processes. The purpose of the symposium was to review the latest concepts and developments and to foster an exchange of information leading to technology transfer from developed to developing countries.

The Aghlabids and their Neighbors
Author: Glaire D. Anderson
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004356045
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 726
Book Description
The first dynasty to mint gold dinars outside of the Abbasid heartlands, the Aghlabid (r. 800-909) reign in North Africa has largely been neglected in the scholarship of recent decades, despite the canonical status of its monuments and artworks in early Islamic art history. The Aghlabids and their Neighbors focuses new attention on this key dynasty. The essays in this volume, produced by an international group of specialists in history, art and architectural history, archaeology, and numismatics, illuminate the Aghlabid dynasty’s interactions with neighbors in the western Mediterranean and its rivals and allies elsewhere, providing a state of the question on early medieval North Africa and revealing the centrality of the dynasty and the region to global economic and political networks. Contributors: Lotfi Abdeljaouad, Glaire D. Anderson, Lucia Arcifa, Fabiola Ardizzone, Alessandra Bagnera, Jonathan M. Bloom, Lorenzo Bondioli, Chloé Capel, Patrice Cressier, Mounira Chapoutot-Remadi, Abdelaziz Daoulatli, Claire Déléry, Ahmed El Bahi, Kaoutar Elbaljan, Ahmed Ettahiri, Abdelhamid Fenina, Elizabeth Fentress, Abdallah Fili, Mohamed Ghodhbane, Caroline Goodson, Soundes Gragueb Chatti, Khadija Hamdi, Renata Holod, Jeremy Johns, Tarek Kahlaoui, Hugh Kennedy, Sihem Lamine, Faouzi Mahfoudh, David Mattingly, Irene Montilla, Annliese Nef, Elena Pezzini, Nadège Picotin, Cheryl Porter, Dwight Reynolds, Viva Sacco, Elena Salinas, Martin Sterry.

Microbial Synthesis of Chalcogenide Nanoparticles
Author: Joyabrata Mal
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 0429895240
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 348
Book Description
Recent years have seen a growing interest in the application of chalcogenide nanoparticles (NPs), e.g. Se, Te, CdSe and CdTe NPs, in various industrial sectors including energy, petroleum refining and in the field of biology and medicine. Moreover, due to the high toxicity of chalcogen oxyanions, their release into the environment is of great concern. Thus, emphasis was given in this study on the development of a novel microbial synthesis process of chalcogenide NPs by combining biological treatment of Se/Te containing wastewaters with biorecovery in the form of Se NPs, Te NPs and CdSe NPs. Enrichment of Se-oxyanion reducing microorganisms was carried out to simultaneously remove selenite (Se(IV)) and cadmium (Cd(II)) from wastewaters by combining bioremediation of toxic Se-rich wastewater with the biorecovery of Se as CdSe NPs. The results showed compositional changes in the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) matrix of the anaerobic granular sludge upon exposure to Cd(II) and Se(IV) and identified the roles of EPS fractions in the biogenesis of CdSe NPs. Besides, it was found that the EPS on the surface of the biogenic Se NPs play a major role in lowering the bioavailability and toxicity of biogenic Se(0) compared to chemogenic Se(0) NPs. An upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor was used for the first time to continuously remove tellurite from wastewater and recover biogenic Te(0).

Advances in X-Ray Analysis
Author: D. K. Smith
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9780306407345
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 456
Book Description
Deane K. Smith Department of Geosciences The Pennsylvania State University Computer automation of x-ray powder diffraction has been one of the dominant topics of this conference for many years. In fact, the first description of such instrumentation dates back to 1967, Rex (1). The modern instruments are considerably more sophisticated than this early unit, but the goals of automation are essentially unchanged. They are to obtain better data at a faster rate with less effort than is possible with manual instrumentation. Indeed "laziness is the mother of invention. " The emphasis of most of the papers on automation has been tm-lard hardware-controlling systems and aC,"lieving accurate d values and good intensities for effective phase identification and phase characterization. Tests of good data include successful pattern searching and matching. Indexing by computer methods or accurate lattice parameters through least-squares fitting procedures with resulting small residuals is a good test of d value accuracy. Intensity accuracy is much harder to test unless a theoretical data set is available. In most of the reported studies, the emphasis has been more on the data acquisition than on the specific problems to which the data is to be applied. In organizing this plenary session, an attempt was made to focus on applications, especially those which are at the forefront of materials studies. In addition many other applications papers were encouraged with the result that a good variety of such topics are included in the program this year.
