In Hecker's multichannel installation Resynthese FAVN, the auditory stimuli produced from the objects within the exhibition space and the synthetic sounds he composed were designed to subliminally override the mechanical processes of human sense. In Inspection II we hear the progressive reconstruction of original source material using algorithms based upon human hearing and designed to capture timbral characteristics of sound. As the source is iteratively extracted from featureless noise, a complex ongoing dialogue commences between formal model and empirical experience of sound. Like Charon, the boatman who ferries souls of the dead across the Styx, Inspection II crosses perpetually from one bank to the other: from the formal anticipations of analysis to the unexpected artefacts of synthesis. In Robin Mackay's libretto, recited by a synthetic voice, this inspective dialogue is transferred to the introspective psychoanalytic situation, where the continual re-narration of the self creates further disturbances and transformations--to attain a definitive image of oneself would be to face one's own death. As discussed in Amy Ireland's essay "Beside a Cold Statue" commissioned for the CD sleevenotes, this process, whose symptomatology is recognizably that of masochism, sees the coldness of the formal model subverted as Hecker's continual resynthesis delivers up a series of harsh, tantalizing, and bewildering textures and timbres: "the resynthesized sound is more intractable, more disorienting, and more empirically obscene--a contingency that always disrupts the plan [...] synthetic progency, nourished on nothing but ice and noise."

This catalogue illustrates Stephan Dillemuth's elaborate solo show at the Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien, Graz, through installation photographs as well as texts by art historian Kerstin Stakemeier and theorist Helmut Draxler. The exhibition presented newly conceived works alongside works from the 1980s exhibited for the first time. Dillemuth's paintings, sculptures, video projections, and assemblages are brought together as a theatrical social group. Plaster-cast limbs appear unexpectedly from the ceiling, enmeshed within clock cogs or combined with boars' heads, cattle ears, and deer feet. Dillemuth's Bayernbilder (1979) were inspired by sentimental and trivial postcard motifs from Bavarian spa towns. In Schönheitsgalerie (1985), featuring over fifty works, Dillemuth explores questions of representation. His gallery turns against the idea of external beauty and how it is represented in art. The paintings, like the faces, develop a life of their own through the process of painting, which makes it possible to see a new kind of "beauty." Works that Dillemuth produced in the late 1980s in Chicago, exhibited for the first time, resemble disco decorations, and glitter in the light of a video projection. Is disco a "theater of cruelty"--an ecstatic place where all images, whether ugly or beautiful, mean or seductive, are transcendent? Addressing the question of the role of the artist in society, Dillemuth challenges the contemporary imperative that artists, as exemplars of individuality, are required to have a distinct authorial identity. Despite a history of working collaboratively and prioritizing artistic research, at the Künstlerhaus Dillemuth exposes himself as a solo artist, reconstructing the history of his work from the margins of group life that has taken shape in the midst of it. This book takes its cue from a simple observation. During the last 30 years or so, the term style has all but disappeared from art critical or art historical terminology. For new art history it was an increasingly problematic term, associated with the taxonomist and historicist concerns of "old" art history, not to speak of its fixation on the figure of the great artist. For contemporary art criticism the term seemed simply irrelevant: Faced with artistic activities that challenged traditional ideas of the work of art and its relation to aesthetics itself, new critical paradigms had to be invented. As interventions in social reality, an art of actions and events, replaced preoccupations with visual style and shape, the politics of social sites replaced the language of forms. But while style has all but disappeared from art historical and art critical discourse, artistic practice since the 1960's onwards has seemed increasingly focused on the stylistics of the life-environment, the way in which everyday life itself is formed, designed or stylized. This development calls for a new reading of the relationship between art and the question of style, one that approaches the question of style itself not just as an art historical "tool" or method of explanation but as a social site in which relations between appearance, recognition and social identity is negotiated. The question or crisis of the contemporary style site is related to the significance of stylistic issues in contemporary politics and economics that capitalizes on life itself and that is perhaps best understood through its particular production of subjectivity. The works discussed in this book treat style as precisely such a site, and should therefore be discussed in extension of what is generally known as "site specific practices" in art. However, the style site works radically change the notion of the politics of this type of art, and may in the end also contribute to open the question of the life-art practices of the avant-garde to new interpretations. Ina Blom is an Associate Professor at the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas at the University of Oslo. She has written extensively on modern and contemporary art and is also active as an art critic.
