Book Description
Excerpt from Honey Flora of Victoria This publication originated in a number of articles which were published in The Journal of Agriculture between October, 1914, and February, 1918, to supply authentic information in plain language concerning the native flora of Victoria, particularly from the honey-producer's point of view. It is to be looked upon as the frame-work of a structure lacking much of the material necessary for its completion, and this issue is published principally with the object of getting into touch with additional sources of information, as well as to check that so far collected and published herewith. Much of the matter as originally published in The Journal of Agriculture has been extensively revised as the result of additional data obtained since, but more is still incomplete, and the author cordially invites the co-operation of those able to assist in making this bulletin as complete and correct as possible. A considerable number of native plants of apicultural and other economic value still remain to be dealt with, as also many introduced species, some of which are of great importance. Such information will be included in a future issue. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive coverage of Victorias superb native wildflowers with 840 colour photographs, mainly by Bruce Fuhrer, the outstanding botanical photographer. Some of the States rarest plants are included as well as many species which are widespread. The introduction gives a brief overview of the natural regions of the State with reference to National Parks and bushland areas known for their diversity and richness of flowering plants. The bulk of the book contains superb colour photographs of the flowering plants, the majority taken close up to display the details of individual flowers and leaves. There are brief plant descriptions, with notes on habitat and distribution, including occurrences in other States and overseas. The text is simply written with a minimum of botanical terms that are covered by an excellent glossary. Not since the publication in 1968 of Flowers and Plants of Victoria of which Bruce Fuhrer was a joint author, has such a wide selection of the States flora appeared in colour in the one volume. Only 50 of the plants illustrated in the book are confined to Victoria and the remainder are found in similar habitats in other States, making the book a useful reference work, particularly in adjoining areas of south-eastern Australia.
