Floodplain lakes in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV) provide valuable freshwater resources for states in which they occur. Thirty lakes in portions of Mississippi and Arkansas were surveyed for chlorophyll-a fluorescence and turbidity using handheld meters to determine relationships between chlorophyll-a concentrations and suspended solids. High applicability of handheld meters in the MAV presents economic benefits for monitoring the numerous lakes in the region. Additionally, twelve lakes within Bear Creek watershed, Mississippi were studied to determine how hydrologic connectivity shapes fish communities. Isolated and permanently connected floodplain lakes exhibited characteristically lacustrine and rheophilic fish communities, respectively, diversifying fishery management opportunities. Lastly, spring diel temperature and oxygen dynamics, as well as juvenile fish communities, were assessed within three habitats in a floodplain lake- pelagic environment, margin and contiguous wetlands. Variability in temperature and oxygen across the three habitats promotes spring habitat heterogeneity while supporting distinct but overlapping juvenile fish assemblages.a

Fish assemblages from 54 oxbow lakes in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley were sampled to identify relationships among environmental variables and fish biodiversity in floodplain lake ecosystems. Environmental variables deterministic over fish biodiversity showed a hierarchical organization and were classified as primary or secondary depending on if one variable was considered to govern another. Primary variables included depth, surface area, surrounding land use, and degree of lake-river interconnectedness. Secondary variables included suites of water quality and primary productivity variables. Maximum depth and percentage of agricultural land surrounding lakes showed strongest relationships with other ecosystem components, significantly influencing water quality, primary productivity, and fish biodiversity. I found contrasting results regarding effect of lake-river interconnectedness on fish biodiversity, but maintain that connectivity is nonetheless an important floodplain lake ecosystem component and suggest that floodplain lake management efforts focus on depth, percentage of agricultural land, and restoration of connectivity.

The Yazoo River Basin of Mississippi includes several rivers and hundreds of floodplain lakes within an area greatly impacted by agriculture. I studied 17 of these lakes distributed over the lower half of the Yazoo River Basin to document fish assemblages and limnological patterns and to identify environmental variables that might influence these assemblages. Potential connectivity of the lake to parent river and wetland-lake area ratio in the watershed were related to the limnological conditions and fish communities. Lakes with greater potential connectivity tended to be deeper and had greater specific conductance and greater fish species richness including more riverine species. Conversely, as the potential connectivity decreased, lakes were shallower, had greater chlorophyll-a fluorescence, wetland-lake area ratio, and a less speciose lacustrine fish community. Species richness and assemblage composition of riverine species were related directly to potential connectivity. Lacustrine species assemblages were linked to wetland-lake area ratio and turbidity.

The purpose of this study is to obtain baseline data on the fish and benthic communities of eight Lower Mississippi flood-plain lakes, including abandoned channel type I, abandoned channel type II, and oxbow lakes. Fish communities were sampled and evaluated using electrofishing, experimental gill netting, and rotenone. The comparison of fish populations of oxbow lakes and abandoned channel type II lakes illustrated similarity in species occurrence, relative abundance, and length frequency. Abandoned channel type I fish populations were not similar to those of the other two lakes. Fish and population data illustrated that although fish are transient among main channel and floodplain habitats during high-water periods, there are particular habitat types that provide important spawning and nursery areas, forage availability and cover for the majority of the lower Mississippi River fishes when river flow is within the channel top banks. Length frequency analysis showed similarities in size categories of fish from all habitats sampled. Threadfin shad comprised the dominant forage base at most habitats. Year class strength coincides with changing hydrology, and it is therefore impossible to characterize static fish standing stocks from each specific habitat.

Surrounding land-use and in-lake data were collected to determine environmental variables influential in structuring centrarchid assemblages in oxbow lakes of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV) and to suggest environmental manipulation strategies that may improve the fisheries of these systems. I sampled 53 oxbow lakes using boat electrofishing and land-use data were summarized using ArcView GIS. Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling separated centrarchids according to water quality tolerance. Centrarchid composition was related to land-use, water clarity, maximum depth, connectivity, primary productivity, and physicochemistry as determined by Canonical Analysis of Principal Coordinates. Canonical Correspondence Analysis rejected the null hypothesis of no relationship between land-use and centrarchid proportional composition. Environmental variables were related significantly to centrarchid composition. Based on these data, a general fisheries management plan for oxbow lakes of the MAV was proposed.

We investigated differences in adult and young-of-the-year (YOY) fishes within each of the six Long Term Resource Monitoring Program study areas, using monitoring data from 1993 to 2001. Our objective was to investigate the relative roles of seasonal, annual, in situ, and physical habitat factors in explaining assemblage structure patterns within the Long Term Resource Monitoring Program study areas. Adult and YOY assemblage structure within each reach was dominated by one to three numerically abundant species. The percent of the total abundance for which these species accounted was 10-88% and varied among age classes and study areas. Physical habitat classes were only weakly associated with differences in fish assemblage patterns within each study area. The amount of variation in fish abundance explained by physical habitats varied among the reaches. Differences among physical habitat classes accounted for 3-23% of the variation in the adult fish assemblage and for 3-20% of the difference in the YOY fish assemblage within each reach of our study area. Factors associated with interannual differences in environmental conditions were strongly correlated to patterns in assemblage structure within each of the six study areas. This was particularly true for YOY assemblages. Such a result would not have been attainable without long-term standardized data. Little is known regarding YOY assemblage patterns and dynamics in large river systems and long-term data sets are vital for continued investigation. The influence of environmental gradients on fish assemblage structure varied among the six study areas and explained 9-31% of the variation in assemblage structure. In the northern four reaches, water velocity was one of the primary factors associated with differences in fish assemblage structure. In the Unimpounded Reach (Upper Mississippi River) and Illinois River study areas, river elevation was one of the primary factors associated with differences in assemblage structure. Depth of gear deployment was influential in explaining differences in assemblage structure patterns in all reaches except the Upper Mississippi River Pool 4 and the Illinois River study areas. In all study areas, the amount of variation in fish abundance patterns explained by sampling period was relatively low. However, assemblage structure differed among sampling periods. In the northern reaches, sampling periods 2 and 3 were the most similar.
