Children's spaces are widening - culturally and socially. Socially, children's spaces are more often multilocal. Culturally, they are enlarged through mobility in the globalized and virtual spaces in the media-saturated world. Children's times are also less confined by strict borderlines. The more flexible and individualized use of time in the world of work impacts on children's lives in families, day care, and school. The chapters of this volume each present particular temporal and spatial aspects of social change in childhood. The book is directed toward considering the impact of such change on children's welfare. As former boundaries between generations begin to blur and neo-liberal forces enter all realms of people's lives, it can no longer be taken for granted - as it was in former periods of modernity - that continued efforts to realize the childhood project will automatically guarantee the "best interest of the child." With respect to children's welfare in time and space, Flexible Childhood? discusses tensions between demands from the market economy, dynamics of rationalization and technology, and visions of a "good" childhood. Together with the above companion volume - Childhood, Generational Order and the Welfare State, also by the University Press of Southern Denmark - this book is the final result of COST Action A19, Children's Welfare, which has been supported by the European COST Framework.

In this book, while introducing different forms of child labour, the causes of continuing child labour and the risks that early labour entails for children in Iran are also examined. In terms of scope, this research for the first time systematically identified more than 57 economic sectors in which child labour is used, and its geographical areas covers two major Iranian cities: the capital city of Tehran and the neighbouring city of Karaj and their neighbourhoods. Field work was largely conducted at a time where the Covid 19 pandemic added to the economic stagnation and poverty among the research population. The age group of research participants ranged from 6 to 18. In total, over 300 interviews with children, parents, employers and practitioners were carried out, and the data was complemented by around 150 hours of participant observation by the research team. This book already published in Farsi and Kurdish languages and number of articles has been extracted from it and has been published in relevant journals.

What is a child? The concept of childhood is so familiar that we tend to assume its universality. However, the meaning of childhood is always being negotiated, not only by the imaginations of adults, but also by nations, markets, history and children themselves. Yet, as much as the question is considered by the social world, the contributions in this book remind readers that children are also active, embodied, and inquiring agents engaged in figuring a relationship with that the world they inherit.
